Thx - I got the roll pin out as per above. I am now beating on the shaft itself...

(or I was until I went out drinkin'...)

The admonition re ensuring the assembly is solidly held and won't move with the hammer strikes is a good one. My vice is even moving as I bang on the pedal cluster shaft...

I don't know how Terry does it but you can heat the surrounding parts, get a compressed air can and turn it upside down and shoot liquefied gas on to just the pin with the long tube that usually comes with it.
