You can get mossin-nagant M91/30s (with bayonets) for well under $100. Pretty good sniper/distance rifles and of course they've got the bayonets for those "up close and personal" zombie encounters.
I'm partial to Russian SKSes too - although they've gotten rather spendy of late. |

i went and did this and it was a real honest to god "M-1 GARAND" class with giant cutaway m-1 /chalk board and a classroom setting. after a 8-12am session in classroom we went out to range and laughed at all the idiots who were not listening about the "M-1 THUMB SYNDROME". real giggles for us..............real pain for them LOL. after shooting the snot out of targets with free CMP ammo, they signed our documents showing we had satisfied range time and class time and we were allowed to purchase. back then it was around $275 for a service grade ready to go outta da box. never did it, and somewhere i still have my qualifying sheets. do you still have to do this or just call CMP and drop yer visa card and they send it to a local FFL near you?????? |

http://www.thegca.org/membership.htm The requirements are much easier to meet than they once were: http://www.thecmp.org/eligibility.htm You used to have to shoot a match, now they just require that you "provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures." Private sale between people in CA is not illegal...all you need to do is go to an FFL to bona fide the sale with the state.
|
A non FFL can sell to a non FFL in another state so long as you send the firearm to an FFL in the purchasers state. All the local laws are then satisfied by the purchasers FFL.

Go to the website. Being a member of many shooting ranges qualifies. I believe taking certain courses can qualify you for the shooting activity. If you get a Utah CHL, that will definitely count.
My CHL qualifies me for my "shooting activity" and my membership in TSRA is my member qualification. The M1 is a great rifle. So is the Springfield 1903. And they use the same ammunition, which they sell surplus. |
California club list
http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearchSubmit.cgi?clubMembership=OPEN&state=CA This club would qualify you and is statewide www.crpa.org Here are the shooting activities, get your range officer to simply fill out and sign a form! - Current or past military service. - Current or past law enforcement service - Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin). - Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor). - Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status. - Concealed Carry License. - Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training. - FFL or C&R license. - Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training. - Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf |
simply put i would rather have a BAR in 30.06, nothing against the garand at all. i did see in shotgun news last month a company selling fully legal/semi-auto/no ffl stamp of any kind browning automatic rifles for around 7-8 grand.
now that would be perfect for zom-beeez. around here M-1 carbines any flavor even hodgepodge singer winchester inland ibm mix and match parts are becoming obscenely expensive. |

Geezus! I did an FFL transfer last week and it ran me $10.

You know Todd, this hobby may cause you to lean a little more to the right... ( I mean... I seriously doubt it, but just maybe...);)

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if this $10 ffl is cutting some corners. His house looked like a warehouse, several pinball machines, slot machines, huge aquariums, lumber and ammo scattered everywhere. He didn't show when he told me to be there and so his helper did it for me, but couldn't make change for my $20 and had to give me quarters. Pretty hokey, but it was for a lower a receiver and close to my house.
|
I feel better. How about I do $10 transfers for Pelicans with CHLN's ( carry permits) which saves me the NICs call?

I tend to pull a tad left so maybe I do need a little more right lean.
I won the auction on the mini 14, now just waiting for the guy to get back to me. The 10/22 arrived at my range as well, so once I get back in town I need to go DROS-up. M1 will be next :p |
Don't forget to buy a Springfield too! Bolt actions work when semi-auto units quit!

At least the 10/22 came in so I'm off to DROS that tonigh :) |
Todd, did you win the 180xxx serial number made in 1976, I think it was? Nice looking gun.
|
Hal, no it is a brand new one. The used ones were going for about the same price and supposedly they have improved it over the years.
|
I have read the same thing about improvements over the years, especially that the newer ones are more accurate. This thread now has me thinking more about a Mini-30. Something about a 7.62 that is appealing.
I have tried to buy a few items off Gunbroker auctions but never "won." Was yours a true auction or "buy it now?" Look forward to hearing how the whole thing plays out, especially how you like the gun. |

The Browning A5 I bid on and won at actions end. I did my homework and had a firm NTE bid in place. I felt the price I paid was good. The Bushmaster I bought "but it now". I printed the "buy it now" price and took it to both local guns stores to see if they would match the price after me adding FFL and shipping fees to the "buy it now price". I wanted to buy local since I was buying new. Both stores just laughed and said they couldn't get within $250.00 of the price....there are some huge "super stores" that post on Gunbroker and deal in volume that allows pricing below even Bushmaster's MSRP on the rifle I wanted. Again, very happy with the deal. |
i screamed "SCREAMED" (2) deals on gunbroker this past month. first juan was my HK-P9S in .45............for $800 bucks. 3 hours later on gunbroker and exact same apple to apple model went for $1400 bucks.
2 weeks later my 100 year aniv GOLD PLATED H&R HK4 in .380 and .22 NIB UN-FREEKING FIRED with original factory target in purple fuzzy presentation wood box i got for $800 bucks and a few hours later the exact same apple to apple item went out at $1200 bucks. smoked some deals on gunbroker wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than local yokal gun shows and local yokal gunstores. |
Unfortunately, you can't snipe on Gunbroker, since last minutes bids extend the auction by 15 min.
|
Seller contacted me and we're ready to go. After shipping at whatnot it'll be close to what I would have paid from my local shop *but* none of them have any and were quoting 3-4 months to get one on order.
|
I've bought most of my guns on Gunbroker, except the 10-22, 5" Springfield 1911 and of course my M1. I've never had a problem and I research the prices before I commit. I also "snipe" the auctions, waiting until just before the end to put my price in. If the price is above my bid, I wait for another one.
My M1A, with a scope and extra mags was a very good deal, considering what these things are going for today. And just about averything I've sold, was on Gun Broker. The nice thing about Gunbroker over Guns America, they actually have the guns. Most of the friggen Guns America ads are just that, ads. You can then put down cash for "something else" and wait. |
On GunBroker, they put an end to sniping, with their 15min rule. Any bids placed on any item within the last 15min of the auction, the 15min clock starts over again, for another 15 minutes. It will keep doing the 15min rule till the cows come home. So now at GB, they have killed sniping.
|
well, turns out the gun I won isn't the same model as is in the picture. I wondered about that and checked before sending payment. The seller is cool, admits that the guy who put up the auction messed up and offered me a tactical instead but flash suppressors aren't legal in CA. There are other ones available though, so the hunt continues...

nostatic not a bad price. $1000 bucks for freeking mini-14's here at the last gun show a week ago.

well, spoke too soon. Turns out he sold his last one yesterday and didn't realize it. So he's checking with his distributors to see if he can find another one. So it is back to gunbroker unless I'm willing to get either black/stainless or hardwood/stainless from a local shop.
