zipper problem/question
got a problem with the zipper on this brief case...when i slide the zipper, as if to zip it.....the zipper does not zip.... this means its broken i presume?
if i twist the part you grab with your hand at an angle and try to zip, i can get it to zip a little but not really.... does this look like a candidate for installation of a new zipper? I think I paid about $300 for this damn brief case a while ago and now its rendered useless... it looks like a heck of a job for a pro (expensive) to replace this zipper and i hate to spend $100 having it fixed. anyone need a brief case? Bill Amberg of London...cheap  http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1233541865.jpg |

im not in NYC anymore. if i was, i would know just where to go....im up in the boonies now
i guess im wondering, does this look like an expensive job? i have no experience with zippers...but it looks involved..looks like it was sewn with a machine prior to completion. not sure what it would entail now a search reveals one zipper repair place in my city...i guess ill take it there |
So did you pack in the law job then?

...what you want for it? |
let me see if i can figure out what it costs to fix it...then ill tell ya. it wont be much. compared to what i paid for it...ill report back in a few days

I had a new zipper put in my favorite leather jacket a few years ago. The tailor charged my something like $50. Come to think of it, go to an upholstery shop.

I don't see any physical damage like broken or missing teeth that would prevent the zipper teeth from fully engaging. Have you tried rubbing a little candle wax along both sides of the area having the problem? It helps lubricate the zipper.

Why did I automatically think " Beans & Frank"?
|
no i didnt. the whole zipper is having a problem...seems to be a problem with the zipper pull not pulling both sides tightly together. i tried some oil last night. made no difference. ill try wax
thanks |
What generally happens is the outside edges of the zipper teeth get worn very slightly and so does the inside of the slide portion of the zipper and eventually one day there is not enough pressing together of the teeth so they latch. You could try squeezing the slider at it narrow end just slightly so the teeth are pulled a bit more tightly together and do it on the outside and inside portions. Not much is needed and it is easy to crush it so care is needed. To replace the zipper on a case like that I imagine nearly the whole thing will require dissassembly as the zipper is sewn in with it laying flat.

try holding tension on the pull tab and then alternate sides and pull each side of the zipper one notch at a time through the slider until you're all the way to the end. fixed a lot of zippers that way.
