I've Got Wood!
Here is a nice piece of fiddleback maple I am finishing for a friends rifle. The thing is stunning! These shots are just with the stain on it. The stain is Chromium trioxide and water. When it dries it looks like dried blood. Then you steel wool off the muddy stuff and magic begins.
![]() ![]() ![]() Now after one coat of Truoil. One down a dozen hand rubbed coats to go. The photos do not do this piece of wood justice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by targa911S; 02-02-2009 at 05:33 PM.. |

That is a stunning piece of wood..I'm crazy about some of the birds-eye curly maple cuts
Hope you don't take offense... but sharpen your photo skilz.. Put the stock on a piece of black velvet or something for a background..

Can you glass in the action as well? That is beautiful! I'd love to get some wood like that for my M1A and my M1.
Can you also do grips for an Standard Govt 1911? And how much would this cost a Pelican buddy?

Yes I can do all that. I usually bed and sight the action at 100 yrds. But I will just bed the action for you and you can have the fun of resighting it in. What kind of grips do you want for the 1911? I have a guy in Maine that cuts killer tusk for me. I will PM you some examples and rough prices tomorrow if you like.

As a violinist, and admirer of all things-gorgeous-wood, that is one stunning piece of wood. And a display of awesome craftsmanship. Just beyooootiful!

I like the piece of wood, just don't care for the configuration of the stock. It is toooo modern looking. much prefer the classic look.
What ever happened to those L C SMITHS you knew about?

No. A duplicator is on my wish list. I pick the wood, or you supply it. For long guns, I then I send it to a cutter that either dupes your old stock or turns a new one to your dimensions and taste that is rough. Then it comes back to me for all the inletting, cutting, fitting, etc. That is the way this one was done. Hand gun grips are basically trace the old grips and cut, then finish. If I had a duplicator I would be self contained. Someday I'll have enough $$$ to pick one up, although my guy is cheap and pretty quick to turn around. I have done them from a plank by hand, but it takes forever. I get $20.00 per hr. and it could go to 60 hrs for something like that. |

Actually you 1911 guys would be better off looking on evilbay for your grips. Not that I don't want the work, but they are stupid cheap there because there are so many. No hurry Keith, just make sure you get me good close ups of all the markings so I can track em down.
Go here... come on $10.00 for wood grips. now that's stupid cheap! |
