Am I missing something?, Just blast the rest of the porcelain off, put bacon grease over all of it and put them back in the cooker for about half an hour on high heat.... just hit them with a wire brush prior to each use... Or use aluminum foil over them each use... and last but not least.... take them out, put in some support rods (Rebar if thats all you have) and buy a single piece of stainless steel expanded metal to put over the support rods as your new grill surface... Back in the day our grill was cinder blocks and a shelf out of an old fridge.....;)

I did just that today and must say it works great or is it grate? I've always wire brushed the tops, but the underside needed scraping with a putty knife. Two SS grates that just fit in our 24" wall oven. Three hours later they came out with just white ash. Wire brushed them and then washed with SOS pad to get a little shine back. While I was at it, I scraped out the whole bbq and even changed the drip pan.

Almost hated to get them dirty again. Thanks for the tip!
