Need Help with my BBQ
My BBQ is in excellent shape except for the grates.
They are the type are made of iron with a porcelain coating, the problem is the porcelain coating is coming off and I cant use the BBQ, because my steaks end up with sandy particles on them. BBQ's galore wants $100.00 per grate for new stainless steel ones. I need 4, no way I'm spending $400.00. Ideas? Suggestions? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1233791702.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1233791720.jpg |
No reason to get stainless for big bux. Go with the less expensive cast versions. They'll still prolly last as long as the Q.
Do you have the manufacturer and model number? We can prolly google some up cheap. |
Order stainless rod and make a new one. What are the grate dimensions?
|
Yours don't look so far gone that they couldn't be sand blasted and refinished. Ours were, we went stainless.
|
BBQ? Low & slow for 14 hours over wood or charcoal! I have no advice whatsoever regarding gas grills other than wondering why :)?
|
That sandy grit in your steaks is just part of the flavoring!
I have a father who subscribes to the Keith Craver way of cooking.... by the time the food is ready everyone has starved to death. |
:). I was just pickin' (as in a pig pickin'). Around here, BBQ is what you eat, not the thing you prepare it on but I've enjoyed the convenience of gas grills over the years also...

Bit the bullitt and went with these, $74.00X4 Ouchhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1233848638.jpg

The gas one is for getting a sear on that Rib-eye where I don't require any smoke or flavoring other than salt and pepperSmileWavy |
Alton Brown on Food network suggests you put the grates in the oven on self clean. Try it. It can't hurt.
|
That's a great idea about putting the grate in the self cleaning oven. Now I have to get the wifey a self cleaning oven so I don't have to scrub the grate from my grill.
126 - next time you need to replace the grate, go with the cast iron ones. They hold and distribute heat much better than those stainless ones. My inlaws moved and left me their all stainless grill. It's bigger and puts out more heat than my little Weber. I tried using it once and it sucked so bad I had to fire up my little Weber. The weber has cast iron grates....the other one has stainless grates. |

Step up to a real BBQ. Buy a Weber Charcoal grill. One can cook up some fine steaks on a Weber. Moreover, there is the option of direct or indirect grilling. I made some killer chicken just last night using the indirect method and smoking it with apple wood--yum. A nice 22, 1/2" Weber BBQ should cost just over $100 and replacemnt grills are available for cheap. On the other end of the spectrum of price, I have been told that the Big Green Egg is simply amazing. But...$$$. Mike |

I would just hit up the local HD or Lowes and pick up similar size replacements. Most of the ones they have there are made by Weber.
|
buy cheaper cast iron grates. then you can keep them clean in the oven.
|
I would have made new ones out of 3/8" steel rod stock.
Why couldn't you have had the flaky ones blasted and used them as raw steel? Buying new is the easiest way to get back in the game. Can't fault you there. Grill on! KT |
You will like those SS grates. It is true that the cast iron distributes the heat better, but when you use it at least 4 nights a week, cleaning the racks to get the salt off really gets old.
Oil them and cure in the oven. BTW, do you have a hot plate for that grill? It looks similar to the one we have. It's a huge grill, mondo surface area. |
FK em all with their snobbery of low and slow over wood. If ya like your gas grill then by all means use it.
