Chinese Women

What's to know about Chinese (mainland) women?

Back from a date, she's been here for 12 years, US citizen, very nice, smart, driven, cute, like her. Oddly she said this was the best first date she's ever been on. We just sat and talked over dessert and coffee, so I'm a little weary.

What's should I know, if anything, going into this?

heh...

The mainlanders I've met have been great but they have a different "style" than women from Hong Kong or even Shanghai. At the risk of generalizing, mainlanders can be somewhat bipoloar - quiet and reserved yet they tend to be pretty outspoken and tell it like it is. They can come off as rather brusque or rude but they aren't - it is just the way things work there.

You just described my edit: daughter-in-law. She could be very blunt. Or quiet as the proverbial mouse. She's from Beijing (ex-Room Monkey #2).

Beijingers, or northerners in general, seem to fit that behavior. It really is just the way it is there. If you can get past that and accept that it *isn't* about you, things will be fine.

See Todd's comments.

There's very little sense of privacy or intimacy. Everything is discussed freely with friends and relatives—which can be very disturbing if you don't expect this.

Also, and at the risk generalizing, I have yet to meet someone from the mainland who has a highly developed sense of humor. Slip on a banana peel—and that's hilarious. Anything else is entirely lost.

Also, now that I think of it, various personal habits (eating, hygene etc.) are significantly different from that which you may be used to, to become irritating in fairly short order.

That said, there can be many fine compensations for these minor irritants.

The first part I have to concur with fully. When I was with the in-laws in China a few weeks ago, it was really frustrating to have my every utterance immediately translated into Chinese for them, when I was really just thinking out loud to my wife only.

However, I couldn't disagree more with the second part. I have met very few Mainlanders who didn't have an excellent sense of humor and I suspect it's even better if you can function in their language. The first Mainlander I dated could have been a stand-up commedienne. She was a riot. I'll never forget her quip when I took her to a PCA DE and she said, "These cars all look alike. Like white people."

I worked at a company that had a large population of mainland Chinese. Mostly nice people, mostly hard workers, but I must say the cultural differences took some getting used to.

It was not unusual to see someone brushing their teeth or taking a snot in the sink at the coffee station.

It was not unusual to go in to the restroom and hear someone in the stall taking an active dump (complete with straining/trumpeting/splashing/grunting) having a conversation on their cell phone.

All I could think on the last one was "I really home that isn't a customer he is talking to...."

All of the married Asian women I have met run the house. For some guys that is cool for others it's a big turn off. For me I would be at odds as I think of a marriage as a partnership.

You heard the good Doctor.

My wife's from Taiwan, I work with with 3 Chinese women, two from the mainland and one from Taiwan. I know a good number of Chinese women (mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan) through my wife's circle of friends. None of the generalizations mentioned above really work. Especially, if they've been in the US for any length of time. I can't speak to the "fresh off the boat" variety. For that, Rick L is your man. I sometimes thought he stationed himself dockside to survey the imports.

My advice, have fun. Oh yeah, where's da pics?

Did she have the crazy eyes? Back up for a second from her next time and make sure she doesn't. This isn't a racist thing or anything- any and all types of chicks have the 'crazy eyes'. I can usually spot them a mile away. Except I sometimes fail in the asian department in recognizing crazy early on, most likely because I have the 'fever.

Man this reminds me I need to get with myself on this woman I just met who works in my department. ... we have a meeting together tomorrow. Damn now that is all I will be able to focus on.

Thanks for the replies. No pics mainly because she's significantly prettier than her pics... by a lot. it was a pleasant surprise. and at 39, could easily pass for 30; I thought I looked young. Came over here married 12 years ago, got divorced 2 years later. still has a heavy accent. Was easy to make her laugh a lot. Makes a very good living, owns her own home. I can see that she'd be quite the taskmaster. She initiated contact and really kept after me for a date (I'm extremely busy now with Spring) to a degree that is a little alarming. I got a vibe of a low sensuality index, but first date doesn't say much.

Bingo to that - although I didn't have exposure to a wide number. Just RM#2 & her extended family & various girlfriends. But RM#2 happily told us about having sex with RM#1 the first time. She told us that she made him wear a condom & subsequently refused when he didn't. (smart girl) She tolds us that he had an HIV test very early in their relationship. RM#1 would be horrified if he knew everything that she told us.
