Sunday Dinner with Dad.
Sunday is my favorite day of the week. My kids know they are expected to be home for dinner. Grandpa is always there. My two older kids drive, so it's rare to have everyone at home at the same time. Sunday is family night. The kids have grown to love Sunday dinner because they know I'll cook something special.
Last nights menu; U.S.D.A. Prime rib eye roast smoked on a rotisserie. Yukon Gold potatoes mashed with sour cream, butter and chives. Fresh asparagus with mayonaisse. Green salad with tomatoes, italian cucumber, celery, endives and balsalmic vinigarette dressing. Foppiano Pinot Noir. Banana Cream Pie. Here's the roast; I covered it with a light coat of olive oil then rubbed in a generous amount of Cavendar's Greek Seasoning. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1234191013.jpg I have some left over things from last weeks Jambalaya, so I filled the drip tray with chopped onion, bell pepper, garlic, fresh rosemary, parsley and red wine. The tray will catch the juices and fill the cooking box with aroma. You can baste the roast with the stuff in the drip pan. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1234191207.jpg There is a smoker box on my grill. I stuffed it with oak from red wine barrel staves. I got a very nice light smoke because I only added a few pieces. You can see the smoke getting started. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1234191329.jpg Finished product; http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1234191373.jpg Sliced. It was incredibly tender and flavorful with a wonderful spiced smoky crust. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1234191445.jpg |

Endured a 3 year old's birthday party yesterday...
Italian grandma was cooking and made all the crying, screaming and whining worth it. Roast beef with red sauce "gravy", meat balls, pasta, roast pork..and wine.. Canoli filled cake with espresso coffee too... Mmmmm... |
Moses, your dad is a WWII vet who's been there, done that, correct? Make sure your kids hear all the stories he's willing to talk about and sooner rather than later. The WWII vet (a German) who taught me the most about that period is not expected to live through the week. I just got word about it on Sat. He's had a very full life, even met Hitler as a child. He's a walking history book. I knew he wouldn't live forever. But I appreciate the countless hours we spent walking, eatching, chatting, whatever, even more now. You can't get that stuff anywhere else but from the folks who lived it.

can I come next Sunday?

That's great getting together with your dad and family. I drive over and get my Dad every sunday morning now. We go have a coffee and shoot the breeze. He says he looks forward to getting together. Not the relationship I had with him when I was a younger guy.

Could only be improved with more family in attendance, perhaps your SIL? :D

how did you know when it was done? instant read thermometer? |
I had a dream about my dad the other night. It was so real I woke up feeling like I had really seen him and spoken to him. Valentines' Day will be the 11th aniversary of the stroke that felled him in my living room, during a visit to see by boys, then one and three. He was almost 60 years old. My wife's dad died about fie years ago, leaving my boys without any grandpas. I dream about him sometimes too.
Cherish him and feed him as much dead roast animal as you can stuff in him. |

Looks great, Moses! I am checking my calender for a suitable future Sunday. :)

One of the sad aspects of my former life in the military is becoming separated from the family.
My Dad, 78, had appendicitis a month ago, and, because he is a stubborn mule and tried to fight through the pain, he got Septic encephalopathy complicating acute appendicitis for his bravery. I spent two weeks at the hospital and a few days at his place. He has never been sick before...looks like he now wants to move near me and my family. Sunday dinner indeed. Cherish the moments and thanks for the reminder. |
Very Good Moses.
Even old Moses needs to listen to Dad's life story. Even though he knows most of it. For one day 20 years on Moses will wake up one day and ask why did that happen? So you better get it done while you can. |

We go through a funny ritual every Sunday. My dad loves red wine, but he's far too cheap to buy expensive wine for himself. On Sundays I always open a nice bottle for him. He tastes it then says, "Oh! That's nice! ... Don't tell me what you paid for it or I won't be able to enjoy it."
Dad lives less that a quarter mile away. Every Sunday he comes over about 6 PM. My three kids swarm him and give him hugs (even the teenagers). Grandpa loves that. |
I would give up allot and so much more ..
for just one more dinner... Rika |
The devil is in the little questions and details.
