Crap, and I'm looking at the more exotic stuff, already having a 10/22 and an 870...

I'm looking at an M4, a Sub 2000, and an AR-50. :D

HOW MANY TACOS CAN YOU FEED A FAT MAN??????

the insatiable gun/ammo purchasing movement is like anything else. if i say you CANT HAVE ANY MORE TACOS..................yer gonna hoard tacos. real simple supply and demand. how many bullets do ya need? how much can you carry? how many guns can you carry? me...................alot! but im not nermal. i shoot whenever i can. i enjoy it and its part of the "lifestyle" i choose to lead. kind of like the "porsche-lifestyle" but it goes bang.

already im seeing shelves getting full again, ammo arriving, parts arriving etc. how many lil old ladies are gonna buy fn's/m-14's/m-16's/augs etc. how many can you safely store?

i'll admit i did get caught up in some of the fast pace frantic buying spree but that was on parts for platforms that i own that are imported. importation of certain platforms parts will be difficult in the future. nermal 20 rd mini 14/m-14/hk/ fn etc.mags will be rare as will other evil assault parts. ie. bayonets/folding stocks/flash hiders etc. but mainly i stocked up on ALOT of spare firing pins/springs/mags(ALOT) and other maintenance related items.

i will say this thru the economy and obamas HB 45 and HB 1022 the frenzy led to some pretty good deals if you were smart or pretty horrendous deals if you were stupid. thankfully when i was much younger i started purchasing black evil semis and really didnt buy anything but parts and mags. now i did venture off into pistols i had always wanted and scored quite a few deals when people got laid off. i admit ............im a vulture!

I hope ammo becomes cheaper and more plentiful - but somehow I doubt it. Right now I'm keeping 150 rounds of each "defensive" round (hollow points in .22lr, .223, 9mm, .357) along with 12 gauge. The rest is for practice and I try to stay above 1-2K rounds of each and just keep replenishing when I find a reasonable price. I have to say that I'm trying to shoot mostly .22 just because of price.

I'd say just go ahead and order the Mini 14 configuration that you like. I'm thinking of getting another one just because they are so damn fun to shoot, but likely an M1 or M1a will come first.

red-beard 04-07-2009 06:45 PM

I went to purchase more .22lr and the price went from $13.99 for 500 to $15.99 for 500. And I bought what they had...

I find it so ludicrous that here in Kaliforniastan we can buy as many damn 10 rounders as we please, but possession of a single >10 rounder could mean jail time. Who thinks up this garbage?

illegal to own or illegal to buy?

If you tape two ten rounders bottom to bottom they would not fit in the gun

That's pretty good.:)

So, you guys who are in gun shops frequently, are you seeing the gun-buying craze winding down?

I know from tracking monthly FBI NICS data that gun background checks were up 30-40% YOY in recent months, so presumably gun sales were up a similar amount. I sometimes check online gun dealers and, as of a month ago, many SKUs were out of stock. (In fact, just checking briefly now, many SKUs are still out of stock.) I was shopping for an AR or FN-FAL but there were none around at any reasonable price. So I figured the gun market was in a bubble and didn't buy anything.

But, bubbles can go on for a long time. So, are you seeing this one deflate, or do you think it is still inflating, or do you think there is no bubble?

Crap, I bought my Federal 550 round boxes for $8.99 a pop two years ago.

I just looked on Gunbroker and the M1A's are going for nearly double what they fetched a tear ago. So, no, this bubble isn't over yet. Prices are about 30% higher when I bought an M1A 4 months ago.

nostatic 04-08-2009 08:57 AM

I would love to pick up an M1A but not at $2K. There are plenty of very nice long rifles that are still under $1K.

I think the black gun frenzy might slow down but who knows. I don't feel compelled to own one so those prices can go as high as they want. I'm more interested in ammo availability and prices.

curlesw 04-08-2009 10:35 AM

I bought one as well, 10 day waiting period is over, just need to swing buy and pick it up!

red-beard 04-08-2009 12:01 PM

10 day waiting period. What a bunch of crap!

JavaBrewer 04-08-2009 12:55 PM

I don't understand having an issue with a 10 day background check. What's your beef there James?

red-beard 04-08-2009 01:14 PM

That you shouldn't have any waiting period. The original waiting period was so that a background check could take place. Now with NICS that is not an issue. So what is the purpose?

nostatic 04-08-2009 01:40 PM

Tomorrow I pick up the 686+. In the grand scheme of things 10 days isn't the end of the world.

JavaBrewer 04-08-2009 01:51 PM

I'm new to this so I'm learning as I go. The NICS system returns with a result quickly. I'm guessing that when the system encounters a new SSN, or one it has not encountered of late, it does a cursory check of primary data stores and returns a result. This might also trigger a deeper check across multiple linked data sources. If one of those turns up an issue the dealer who invoked the NICS check gets notified of change? Just off the top of my head...

pwd72s 04-08-2009 01:54 PM

I have a cut down enbloc clip for my M1 Garand...holds only 5 rounds of 30-06...this so I could legally hunt with it if I wished to...Oregon hunting regulations say only 5 rounds or less rifle capacity.

nostatic 04-08-2009 01:55 PM

I don't give my SSN on the DROS. It isn't required. It is supposedly only used to deconflict common names.

The 10 day wait is also supposed to be a "cool down" period. Like people can't hold a grudge over 10 days...

"I'm guessing that when the system encounters a new SSN, or one it has not encountered of late, it does a cursory check of primary data stores and returns a result."

The NICS system does not appear to work that way to me. My take is that every search is done from square one. In my customer database I note how their NICS call goes, either 1)ok'd immediately 2)delayed-proceed in 5 minutes, or the # of days 3) and of course the occassional denied result.
It would seem a person who gets a delayed response (of whatever duration) gets it every time, even if the call is only a day apart.
I've been curious as to what information comes up on the screens of the second layer at NICS but they have been a tight lipped bunch. I've noticed some different id #'s on the examiners, they had four digits since day one but now I'm getting some letters and six digits. They give their first name also but I've gotten to recognize a number of them by their voice.

"I have a cut down enbloc clip for my M1 Garand...holds only 5 rounds of 30-06"
Somebody (Sarco?) used to sell a 2 round clip for the Garand. There was a 10 shot stage of a military match that required a re-load, thus the need for the thing.
