Lincoln also said that he never wanted blacks to be able to vote. Does that mean we shouldn't acknolwedge the good things he's done?

He was against the ranking of races as different species. Also he was strongly opposed to slavery and the mis-treatment of natives. The man who taught Darwin the taxidermy profession was a freed slave who said Darwin was a "very pleasent and intelligent man".

A Darwin quote for you here:
"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes … will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla. [2]" [2] Charles Darwin, "The Descent of Man", 2nd edition, New York, A L. Burt Co., 1874, p. 178 http://www.mediamonitors.net/harunyahya44.html Sounds awfully damn racist to me. ------------------------------------------------------- But feel free to draw your own conclusions: http://www.google.com/search?q=darwin+racist&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US fficial&client=firefox-a

The quote is clearly and perfectly understandable as a stand alone statement.
The man was a blatant racist. |

I wonder if, say, Darwin was not the poster-boy of Evolution - would you perhaps care a little less about the alleged racism..?

srandallf: I can only go by the mans own words. The statement i listed above is a direct quote of his. On it's very face it is both blatantly racist and outright elitist. His work may have been brilliant, but as a man, he was clearly a racist. We all have our faults. Quote:

No, I asked a simple question. I am not a stranger myself to have a tendency to be slightly biased in my opinions, based on how I feel about subjects in the vicinity of a given topic. I wondered if you thought that could be the case for you too.

An elitist-racist is an elitist-racist. I don't care what his field of work is.

Let's remember how long ago this was and the prevailing attitudes and norms at the time.

[2]"
Let's break that down. At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace the savage races throughout the world. I read, based on historical precedent that civilized societies will exterminate uncivilized societies, either passively or aggresively. True, the Spanish brought IIRC, small pox to the New World and inadvertently wiped out the Incas. In N America we did a pretty good job of decimating the Native American tribes and sticking them on reservations that even today offer a grim prospect for survival. Deforestation in the Amazon threatens indigenous tribes that go years without contact from the outside world. That is not racist, it is a purely logical conclusion. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes … will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state..... Darwin is predicting the extinction of Apes which will broaden the gap between modern day man and the common ancestor. It will be another "missing link" in our evolution. Not missing in the classical sense, we don't know what it was, but missing as a link has been removed from a chain making the possibility "...as we may hope..." of another competitive or even superior "human race" evolving less likely to ever occur. even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla. This is meant as a reinforcing example of the previous part of the statement. It very simply illustrates the survivability gap between a highly advanced society, and a less advanced society. That an advanced society does not need to be concerned about competing for survival with 'lesser" life forms. Agriculture is an example of a society that is more advanced than hunter gatherers and has a greater potential for long term viability. At the time Darwin wrote this Africans and Australians were still competing with other animals for basic's, food, water and were also more prone to be a consumable part of the food chain. Something which Caucasians did not generally need to worry about.
