Charles Darwin´s Birthday!
200 years since the birth of the bloke who discovered my personal all time favorite scientific thesis. The elegance in all its complex simplicity of Evolution.
Rejoice! Oh and please, don´t make this a crapped up PARF thread. This is about acknowledging the hard work and fine brains of an individual who is still remembered and respected after 200 years. Whether you believe he was correct or not.

I think the guy would be horrified to see his named enshrined inside these bumper-sticker fish with feet, regardless of his scientific conclusions..

Great man but He didnt "discover" evolution. That would be Alfred Wallace(well, he was the first to publish). Wallace published his work in 1855(4 yrs before Darwin).
I'm not implying Darwin stole the idea but Wallace had already wrote about it thru his work in Brazil. It appears that Darwin came to the idea without knowing about Wallace. After he did find out about Wallace, he consulted him for his book. It was decided by the Royal Academy of (I forgot the correct name) that Darwin had the best chance of being taken seriously(partly because Wallace promoted other "crazy "ideas like spirtuality). In the end the Royal Academy of(?) gave Darwin credit for being the first to publish about evolution and Wallace is mostly forgotten. This was a big hub-bub at the time. |

All this because of Wedgewood pottery. Who could have predicted it?
I believe he was a genius and have taken today off to celebrate.

What started 200 years ago is continuing today. I think this would make Darwin proud:
Scientists map Neanderthal genome http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090212/sc_afp/scienceusgermanygenomeanthropology;_ylt=AgQ7lM_r6G cuEdasc5BaZMYEtbAF CHICAGO (AFP) – In a development which could reveal the links between modern humans and their prehistoric cousins, scientists said Thursday they have mapped a first draft of the Neanderthal genome. Researchers used DNA fragments extracted from three Croatian fossils to map out more than 60 percent of the entire Neanderthal genome by sequencing three billion bases of DNA. "The Neanderthal genome sequence will clarify the evolutionary relationship between humans and Neanderthals as well as help identify those genetic changes that enabled modern humans to leave Africa and rapidly spread around the world," Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology said in a press release.
