.22 pistols
 

Since the 10/22 is so much fun (and cheap) to shoot, I'm looking for a pistol to accompany it. We have a Walther p22 but it is way too small for my hands. The Sig Mosquito gets mixed reviews, and I'd like something a bit more accurate.

Smith & Wesson 41 comes up all the time but I'm not really wanting to spend upwards or $1K right now. So that seems to leave Ruger MkII/III or Browning Buckmark. I'm leaning towards the Buckmark as they are supposed to be a bit easier to take down. This looks pretty sweet:

Sig Trailside is one I'd like but they can be tough to find and I'm not sure they are CA legal any more. Sig also makes a .22 barrel setup for my p226, but at $390 I can buy a whole other gun for that.

My dad has a browning from the early '80s. I think its a challenger II. That thing goes bang every time. Now I am biased but I would go for the browning for a .22. I have never had an issue out of a browning.

Have you considered revolvers? S&W K-22's are wonderful little guns, as are my personal favorite, the Ruger Single Six. K-22's are getting a little spendy these days, but Single Sixes can be had anywhere from around $200 for a used one to about $400 or so for a brand new one.

Single actions are great guns for teaching kids how to handle a handgun. They simply will not shoot without a deliberate move to cock the hammer first. They only hold six, and they are somewhat slow to load and shoot, so it makes the kids slow down a bit. They teach a kid to slow down and aim to get hits, rather than to miss quickly because there are always more in the magazine.

Kids? He's got the Walther...this one's for me. :p

He actually likes revolvers but vastly prefers the 10/22...

Is there an advantage with the Ruger over the Browning?

I've mostly read that the Browning has a significant edge over the Ruger wrt field stripping. Other than that it depends on what looks/feels best to the individual.

Get a nice, used Ruger Mark II.

The take down isn't too difficult once you get the hang of it. I still have to use the manual to put it together, but it only take me a minute or so to reassemble.

I got the Ruger because I realized I was paying for an hour of range time and only using 20 minutes with the 9mm.

Oh, and...

My Ruger likes the copper FMJ Federal stuff. I used to be able to get it for $8 for 550 at Wal Mart, but now I think it is closer to double that.

I would get all sorts of misfires and stove pipes when I tried to use the cheap Remington stuff.

Of course, you could get the moderately expensive stuff, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

A guy at the pistol club has a buckmark and says it's very accurate. I just like the look of them :)

+1 for the buckmark its a great little gun!

Ruger Mark II or III. Simple and efficient for a .22 LR. The Ruger security six with the interchangeable .22 mag cylinders, bigger grips, and hollow points is vastly under rated. Pressure is going out the barrel rather than blowing the slid back. Like legion said 550 rds. here in Co. for about $14. (Federal LR ,Walmart), .22 mag (HP) about $10 (50)

+1 for the Ruger MKII, esp the stainless competition variants. Stunningly accurate, solid and beautiful IMO.
