Paint for fiberglas shell?
I have a 95 Bronco full size which has the fiberglass back cap. This has faded and also has been scratched up during R&R. I would like to repaint it dull black. This has a rough finish.
How do I sand this and what paint do I use to paint it? Any primer needed? I have a spray gun but am also open to spray cans.  Thanks, George |

You can "sand" it with a ScotchBrite. I'd paint it with Rustoleum satin black if that's the finish you want. Rustoleum is a synthetic enamel any more, not just a metal paint. You can also get flat black or you can mix the two for a nearly flat finsh. Totally flat will be hard to maintain.

Very nice. Will that hold up to the elements - especially SoCal UV? This one? http://doitbest.com/Spray+Paint-Rust+Oleum-model-7777-830-doitbest-sku-789356.dib I have a soft top on there now but am getting tired of it as it requires snapping open / close every time I load something. I want the hard shell back for good. George |

Probably doesn't need to be roughed-up like a glossy surface does for paint to adhere.
Maybe just wipe it down with acetone and squirt paint on it. |

For fiberglass I like the marine version of the rustolem that you can find at lowes - I find it bonds better to fiberglass and has better UV performance.
Sand it down - 150 is fine - wash off with TSP and water - allow to dry. Get a foam roller and apply.

Are the fiberglass hairs showing through? If so, you should probably shoot some gel coat on it, and then paint it. You can even tint the gel coat black, which will help hide future scratches.

No hair. Just some scratches that are only standing out because they are white. I won't even worry about filling them.
