I'm going to look at a car on Friday. Is anyone aware of a company that rents paint meters?

Are you trying to determine dry film thickness?

For measuring DFT "dry film thickness" or measuring total coating thickness.. to find out if there is to much filler under the color.. Don't know where you can rent them.... You can buy from a subsidiary of a company I work with...S.G. Pinney Better yet check Eastwood.. they sell a magnetic one... maybe with Fed-ex next day you could be set up

An isoscope? We used em at work to make sure we painted aircraft parts per spec. That's the name of the tool you're looking for, at least. Hope this helps.

Take a magnet and wrap a cloth around it. If it sticks to the body - metal. If it doesn't, bondo.

My appraiser uses a soft flexible fridge magnet. Its actually his business card that he threw on my tool box when he left.

Thanks for the input so far but for clarification, a paint meter will measure and display paint thickness where ever it is placed. Marked variances in uniformity indicates refinishing. Marked thickness indicates bodywork under the paint. Unfortunately, I still don't have one to rent and it's approaching too late . | ||

Well, if you don't get one, the magnet thing works. But, before I drag something on someone else's paint, I do a comprehensive visual. There is no way a car can be repainted or repaired that I can't find telltale signs. There is always overspray somewhere. Somewhere.
