Kumho Tires - Any opinions?
The local tire shop keeps pushing them for my daughter's SUV. I told him I wanted the Michelin Cross Terrains, which are pushing $1,100 out the door. The similarly rated Kumho's are $650. He acts as if he just trying to save me some dough, and I've trusted him for some time.
Anyone had a bad experience with them. BTW - they apparently have a better warranty to.

If you're looking for good cheap tires try Fuzion. I've used them on my 928 for 5 years now. They give as good a grip as anything else i've tried, including Pirelli(at least for street purposes), they get decent treadwear, and as i said....cheap.

I don't think Fuzions are SUV tires. I think he's asking about SUV tires.
I can tell you that Kumho's got a pretty healthy following in the performance tire category. They make some good, inexpensive tires. I can only assume, based on their performance tires, that their other tires are also good which may or may not be a valid assumption.

I got Kumhos the last month i had the RX8. They were some tenacious little buggers. They have a very good reputation in the performance world.
Way I look at it is, lets say they only last 75% as long- they are still 50% cheaper. At the least, I think your mechanic is being a good guy whether or not you decide to go with the Kumhos. |

i had a bad experience with Kumho. They tend to flat spot if the vehicle sits. I had 2 sets do this, 1 on my boxtsre and the other on my daily driver Jetta. The baxster had flat spotting VEY bad, the jetta was definetly noticeable...when i contacted Kumho, I got the normal Korean repsonse to conflict (head in sand) and they basically said too bad. Personally I would NOT ever buy Kumho again and would not reccommend them either. Dunlop, Michelin or another name brand, never Kumho(I actually love the Goodyears i got for my jetta....)

Have had good luck with Kuhmo's. The fuzions are also a great value, I am next to posivive that they will have an application for SUV"S, I recently bought a set of truck tires from them. I personally think that the Kuhmo rides a little better, and has a little more grip, but the fuzion's seem to wear longer. I regularly sell both of them as there is a signifigant savings over the name brands. Check with the tire rack, also, they always have good deals, and cloesouts avialable.

Interesting that more than one mentioned flatspotting.
In that my daughter is 17, the car seldom rests longer than 8-10 hours.

For an everyday car, Kumhos are great tires. I recommend to everyone at work to get Kumho All Seasons for their "regular" vehicles - Camries, Civics, etc. I've had them on an Acura RSX, Honda Accord, and Honda CR-V, and I've been very happy with all of them. They even go great in the snow (which is probably not a consideration for you in So Cal).
I've never had a vehicle parked long enough for the tires to flatspot, so I can't speak to that.

I like the Kuhmos, true they will develop flat spots if they sit for long, like overnight in the cold. They become round again in about 10 miles. I also like Michelin as well. I have both, the Boxster and the 911 have the Kunmos and the MB has the Michelins. Great millage outa both, we are talking cars here. I do know Michelin makes a very good light truck tire, and they get killer wear.
JMO you will get a good tire no matter which you chose.

I've been through several sets of Ecsta STX's on my old truck. I liked them a lot. Good dry traction, good wet traction when there's enough tread, and the price is right. They are a performance tire so mileage isn't great, at least not the way I drive

I've heard the Kumhos flatspot due to the polyester belts they use, but that could be an urban legend. Polyester takes a "set".

However the gift card won't arrive in time to use it to pay for the mounting, unless you have a particularly friendly tire place that will store them for 3 weeks.

Putting a set of slightly wider ASXs on our Mazda3 absolutely TRANSFORMED that car. It's literally 3 times the handling from the OEM tires. I have every intention of putting the SPTs on the 911 unless a spectacular offer appears instead.

I've always been happy with the Kumho tires that I've had. Don't waste your money on Michelin, they're good but cost 3x what they should. I would suggest consulting Tire Rack's reviews, they've never steered me astray.
