The best and oldest bar in my town (the Chukker, Tuscaloosa AL) closed down here in 2001 and we still mourn the loss of that gathering place.
I must have spent a week driving all over that damn state, finally settling on a little hick bar outside of Mobile, Manci's, established 1944 or so (I'm at work and am going by memory.) They had the oldest liquor license. The bartender there suggested I try the "old n**r" bar down the road. I didn't stay long. And the old bar that used to cater to black folks, as I prefer to call them, wasn't very old, after all.

Alabama was the most disappointing state. I found plenty of great historic inns, but they were all converted to museums serving nothing more entertaining than a brochure. The people were as nice as can be, though.

I bet I missed a few bars. If you know of something older, I'd like to know.

The Devil's Slide Tunnel. It's a 4200-foot-long Highway 1 tunnel about 20 miles south of San Francisco. It will bypass a stretch of highway that closes from time to time, for up to 6 months, when the mountain decides to dump some dirt into the ocean. They're about halfway done. Vash worked on a big bridge that accesses the north portal.

The Chukker opened in 1953 and claimed to be the longest continuously operating bar in the state when it closed in 2001 - or so the story goes.

Mobile, being one of the oldest cities in the nation, is the most likely spot for the oldest bar. But - a quick Google search for "oldest bar in Alabama" yields the Peerless Saloon in Anniston. Hmm we'll have to check it out. The website says it was established in 1899.

Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan beats out McSorley's by almost 100 years.

Mobile yielded nothing. The Peerless Saloon sounds like a winner, though. I'm finding I will have to edit some chapters, and Alabama looks like just one of those chapters.

I think that it sounds like a great idea. Although I do agree with some of the others that you must have good photos (with captions) and real history, not just a few anecdotal stories about bunch of drunks. Let us know if you get published.
