How much do you guys have on-hand and how much do you shoot? I try to have 2K of 9mm, .22lr and now .223 at any point in time. In a typical session at the range (once a week) it'll be 100 rounds of .22, 50-100 rounds of 9mm. For the desert trip it is a LOT of .22, 100 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of .223 (or more).

I try to have 1000 of 9mm, .223, and .22LR. I have a few hundred of .17HMR, a few dozen of .30-30, and 22 rounds of .50 BMG.

but how much do you shoot and how often?

A PARF thread on the same issue from last week. |
I try to hit the range at least once a month. In the winter it is usually handguns, in the summer rifles and shotguns.
I'll shoot 100 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of .22LR in an hour at the indoor range. I might only shoot 20 rounds of rifle ammunition in a session on the outdoor range. Shooting four games of trap is pretty standard for me. |

Toughest caliber I've found to source is 8x56r for my Steyr M95 - but I do have a bunch of it. Several thousand rounds of various calibers (I'm not going to get much more specific than that online for obvious reasons). Let's just say if the zombies decide to come, they'll be sorry.
I used to shoot about 1x/month, less so now (getting expensive and being out of work makes it tough to pay for). But I always leave the range with more ammo than I arrive with - either that or I make sure to order enough right after going to make up whatever I shot, and then some. |
7.62x39 is getting hard to find. even J&G sales is out of it.
5.45x39 is still cheap. 1080 round cases for around $170. only really works with the ak-74 or polish tantal. S&W makes an AR-15 upper chambered in this one. 7.62x54r is still pretty reasonable. 440 rounds for around $80. M44, and the PSL use this round. The PSL is Semi-auto with 10 round mags. a lot of guys dog the old russian guns, but they are a lot of gun for the money, and at this point, it's time to just start buying in bulk. <BR> http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1236210614.jpg |

That's right. Mosin-Nagants are cheap and accurate. I'll probably pick up a couple more before too long. Maybe a little more 7.62x54r too.
.30 is awfully expensive right now too. |

I've been reloading my own ammo since October of last year and I can hardly find components. Ammo has been in short supply here too. I stopped at a local ammo mfg yesterday (MI Ammo Company) and they said they can't get sm pistol primers, etc...
|
The one indoor range I shoot at requires you to buy ammo from them. Is that typical of most places?

From what I gather, your experience shooting it depends heavily on the specific rifle you use. The Armalite AR-50 is widely recognized as having the best muzzle brake. That and the Barrett M82, being a semi-automatic, only kick like a 12 gauge. Everything else seems to be capable of leaving a decent bruise from the first shot. |
The M-82/107 isn't so bad. The barrel recoils in the mechanism, so it's a lot less kick than one would expect. The bolt action .50s are supposedly pretty brutal though.

I've noticed here in Louisiana I cannot get or find the "good" 9mm ammo. I've managed to obtain a box of Cor-Bon 115g still looking for a box of Double-Tap/speer gold dot. It seems to
be the good self defense ammo is what I have a time getting. What about mail order ?? I've looked at ammo to go web site www.ammunitiontogo.com/ anybody get ammo off the web ? |
Yes. A2G is a good source.
