Camera Question

With all the camera guys on this board I thought I would ask whether you had any idea where I might best try to sell a couple of almost unused M-6's that I have had for some time.

I bought these just before I switched to digital photography, so they haven't seen a lot of action. One has the Summicron 1:2/35 and the other a Tele-Elmarit 1:2.8/90.

Also what's the best place to try to sell these? Is there a Leica enthusiasts site for this sort of thing? or would you do Craigslist or EBay?

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

There's one on ebay that's at $806 right now.

Those are nice cameras..they have probably held their value better than most film cameras, but I'm sure they are worth much less know as a result of the 'digitilization' of photography.

I would think ebay would be the best place to sell them, search for completed listings to get an idea of selling prices.

I am still keeping my Leica CL and my Konica rangefinder along with my wife's (pro photographer) Contax, 4x5 and assorted Nikons. Though all we use know are a digital point and shoot and a Canon EOS 5D...

Times change!

Just out of curiosity—what are you keeping your cameras for? I mean I really like my M-6's, but just cannot imagine ever using them again.

Dottore-

I'm keeping them because I might use them again and their values are so much less now than when I bought them that there seems little reason to sell.

My wife's Contax 645 set-up could still be very useable but shee needs to invest in a good digital back, but they are still too expensive so she mostly uses the Canon or rents a medium format digital camera for jobs.

How did you end up with TWO Leicas?

wow. you have TWO???

looking at your's, bums me out that i didnt by the silver one. i have a black M6. i may never sell it. you know both those lenses can be retrofitted onto a digital body right? at least i think so.

i want the M8 so bad, that i wonder about kidney donation programs.

damn, i paid thousands for my setup. effen digital. think you would ever just sell the 90mm lens?

dottore, you know the drill. crazy lighting situations, that a regular camera would blow out the whites and blacks...the leicas laugh at. if i ever buy a new house, it will need a multi car garage, and room for a dark room. go old school.

Oh, that's a good idea, if the lenses can be fitted onto the new Leica digital cameras, maybe you can sell one body and put that money towards a Leica D series?

If it was me, I would sell the 90mm lens too, I never cared for that format, unless you are shooting portraits, which the Leica is not really suited for...I always liked the Leicas best for street photography with a wide angle lens.

ok, i called and asked.

the older lenses work outright. now if you want to get it retrofited for the rangefinder to mesh up...it will cost you $150 bucks. (cheap in leica speak)

the older bodies go for $500 trade in. i assume you could sell it for more. so i would sell both bodies, one lens and get a M8.2. $6000 at the store i called. i recently saw a $1500 factory rebate from leica.

Yes. I looked at the M 8.2. A beautiful camera. That may be an option.

I absolutely love the 35 mm F1:2 lens. I used to use this for 90% of my photos—but eventually ended up getting a second body for the portrait lens.

The real problem is I recently bought a Leica D-Lux 4 Titanium, and am so delighted with it that I'm going to have serious difficulty justifying going the M 8.2 route.

One of my projects this year has been to simplify my life. I'm trying to get rid of possessions that don't have any real utility for me anymore. (This might the subject of a separate thread.) This camera thing is part of that exercise.

Agreed. The 35mm F1:2 was always my favourite. A perfect lens in my view.

i have the same 35mm. AWESOME! simply awesome.

i dont know the factor, but putting the 35mm on a M8.2 makes it something else...like a 40 something? to be perfect we would need a 28mm.

Not really interested in selling the 90mm alone.

But see my post above. I know the Leica D-Lux 4 is considered pretty gay by the hard-core camera crowd, but I have been blown away by the available light photos I have been able to take with it. A very fine piece of kit for a fraction of the price of the M8.2.

If I had some spare cash I'd buy one of the M6s and a lens in a heartbeat.

I would think eBay would yield the best sales price. I saw a minty M6 start at $1,650 then drop down to $1,200 before it was marked sold. That was body only. I'd sell the lenses separately so you don't limit yourself to buyers who want that particular combo.
