Anyone Still Buy CDs?

A fun pastime back in the day was going through friends' album, and later CD, collections, and having visitors check out mine. Some great conversations would ensue. Not quite the same when scrolling through someone's iPod.

I mostly download these days, but will buy an occasional disc I consider "essential." So who still buys CDs? Or never does anymore. Just wondering.

I don't download - I can't trust the inter-web-net thingy.
I still buy CD's. And I do have satellite radio as well.

If I want new music enough to pay for it, I want the CD which would serve as a backup for the music after I rip it to itunes.

Yep - I buy lots of CDs...sometimes two or three a week. I maintain a pretty extensive CD "wish list" at Amazon. In addition, I still buy vinyl. I also don't own an iPod or a surround sound system. However, I have invested many thousands of $$$$ in my two channel stereo rig, and beyond my 930, that's my other hobby. I also see lots of concerts.

I buy all of my music on CD. I've never been a big fan of MP3s.

I still buy CDs/Vinyl in addition to downloads. Not everything is available for download, and used CDs are a steal.

I'm a two-channel guy with thousands of CDs (50/50 - purchased and burned from "lossless compression" sources) and vinyl too. I can sure hear a difference (on my system), and will not tolerate MP3s (or any compressed sources) in my house . I don't buy that many these days (I can't listen to all I do have), but do buy on occasion...

I’m a 2 channel guy too and I haven’t bought any CDs in years.
Mass storage is the future so I had my Ipod converted to a “Imod” by Red Wine Audio.

You can read about it here: http://redwineaudio.com/iMod.html

I run it through dual NAD 272 power amps with a NAD c162 pre amp. Speakers right now are Klipsch and Spica (going back and forth between the two). Turntable is an ‘80s era Dual CS-5000.
I converted all my files to lossless and while not true audiophile quality, it’s pretty amazing.

I'll probably never move my collection away from what I currently have (as it would be way too much effort). All of my sources are uncompressed, and although it's a bit of a compromise between true audiophile and convenience, I have 1300 cds (roughly a third of my collection) available at the touch of a button (5 players). If it ain't broke....

Like legion was saying, I don't care for compressed MP3s either. I buy very little CD's because of there sterile sound. Believe it, vinyl records sound better than any of them. I do have an unusual sound system. My CD collection is basically for my cars.

Vinyl is becoming available and popular again!

I buy all of my music on CDs. Not that I dislike digital distribution. It's cheaper, easier to maintain, etc. But the fact that DRM has been running rampant on platforms kills my urges to use it. I bought one through the Zune Marketplace to try, but I can't play it on the home theatre machine, but only on my desktop because that's what I bought it from. All of my music resides on the theatre and I stream it around the house. I had to resort to downloading the album through a torrent in order to play it on other devices. Lame. With CDs I can rip and play as I choose.

I do love vinyl too, but CDs (DAC converters) have come a long way since the mid-80s and I compromise for the convenience. Most DAC converters contained in the source players are virtual crap, therefore I use digital connections (for all of my CD sources, DAT, DVD, etc.) into into my pre-amp which has a great DAC. Although vinyl IS making a comeback, it's still pretty limiting depending upon what you like. I do know what you mean about most CD (systems) sounding sterile, but mine really does compare favorably with analog. MP3s - NEVER

Buy maybe 2 CDs a year. Buy maybe 10 CDs equivalent a year on iTunes.

I'm still buying CD's... a lot of stuff I listen to is not up-loadable.

I listen to Pandora at work and it turns me onto a lot of weird esoteric stuff.

I'm not an iTune person... when they start putting hard drives back into automotive head units then we will talk.
