Stocking up on guns and canned food ... seriously?

So there's been a lot of dry humor recently about preparing for "when the zombies come," and using "guns and ammo as an investment hedge against inflation." I've generally laughed it off, because ... people are joking, right?

Then, in this morning's review of the news, I saw this quote from Barton M. Biggs, managing partner at Traxis Partners. "He advises well-to-do investors to arm themselves — with shotguns, if need be — against the possibility of a deepening downturn and accompanying 'social unrest.'"

Now maybe he's just joking too, but ... is anyone seriously stocking up on NRA-Certified Household Protection Equipment with anything other than hobbies or hunting in mind? Is there a real fear that this will degenerate into honest-to-god street-fighting and looting of occupied houses? Or is it just morbid humor?

If you've got good sources to suggest that this is likely, I'd enjoy a good read.

Thanks,
Dan

PARF, and limit your search to the right wing Republican faithful. It'll probably happen this week, as from what I've read, we can't possibly make it two whole months .

I'm stocking up on ammo since my guns will be worthless without it. I live 9 miles from Detroit... any questions?

Dan, how's your bunker coming along?

On the other hand, I'm not going to let my supply of ammo drop below a certain level.

You live in DC? You should be the FIRST one stocking up!

Why? I live in DC, too. Are you planning an assault?

No, but that's where the Zombies originate. I'll be safely out-of-reach in my desert home.

We've been secretly deporting the Zombies to all the major metropolitan areas in the nation. We now have a very manageable Zombie population in DC, especially since the Heller v. District of Columbia decision.

Oh yeah...especially since you can now have a loaded revolver in your home! Whoopee!

Dick Heller's application to register his semi-automatic pistol was rejected because the gun was a bottom-loading weapon, and according to the District's interpretation, all bottom-loading guns, including magazine-fed non-assault-style rifles, are outlawed because they are grouped with machine guns.[60] Revolvers will likely not fall under such a ban.

On December 16, 2008 the D.C. Council unanimously passed the Registration Amendment Act of 2008 which addresses the issues raised in the Heller Supreme Court decision, and also puts in place a number of registration requirements to update and strengthen the District's gun laws.

The D.C. government has indicated it will continue to utilize zoning ordinances to prevent firearms dealers from operating and selling to citizens residing in the district, meaning it will remain almost impossible to buy a gun legally. The D.C. government has also announced that it will continue to enforce a separate ban on magazine fed semi-automatic rifles and semi-automatic handguns not considered in the Heller case

The semi-auto ban is gone, too. I may be adding to the arsenal in near future, too. BTW, shotguns/rifles are allowed here. What more do you need for Zombie-defense?

You need to be able to leave your home with them...unless your stock-pile is already in place.

For those who are living in areas where certain weapons/types are restricted, here's a pic of what freedom looks like:

If there are Zombies in the streets, firearms laws are irrelevant.

I think there's way too much hysteria lately. When a guy can't go to Wal-Mart and pick up a few hundred rounds of 9mm to go plinking at the range, it's clear that there's too many panicky people out there. I just stay reasonably prepared for whatever life throws at me.

Whatever. This horse has been beaten to death ad nauseum on every forum the Internet has to offer.

Enjoy your "freedom" and I'll enjoy mine.

Stay safe! Zombies are on the way...

99 has the bolt toward the rear. The pic above is a (late) model 82.

Wow.

I cast my own out of scrap titanium from the crashed UFO found on my property.

Edit: CheaperThanDirt.com and AmmunitionToGo.com do not ship to DC...

Yeah, it's too bad they are no longer allowing walk in customers. They are about 45 miles away. I drove through Brenham yesterday.

BTW, the Bluebonnets are up! Definitely not peak yet, but they are popping in Washington County.

Well here is the situation as I see it.

The gubbermint showed in the Katrina thing, they expect you to put up for at least a week on your own if anything goes to hell.

Having a few cases of beans and 20 gallons of water stashed can't be a bad thing then.

Periods of social unrest invariably mean a rise in crime. Some of that crime is violent home invasion.

The best defense is a panic room. That's a lot of money. Guns are cheap, and provide a little defence. So Unless you can get a panic room, best get a gun.
