Ala. man kills at least 9, including 4 relatives

SAMSON, Ala. (AP) - A gunman who left nine bodies scattered across two counties burned down his mother's home with her still inside, killed four relatives on a porch and then targeted strangers before killing himself, authorities said.

That's a horrible story.

The world's effed up. Just last weekend in Baltimore a 33 y.o. grandson poured lacquer thinner on his grandmother and set her on fire. The reason, she wouldn't loan him $7.00. Yes the decimal point is in the right place

well its time to BAN LACQUER THINNER and LOANS to grandchildren!

hell with this incident(alabama) and the one in germany, it will be damn interesting to see once again how this slipped thru the cracks. how did they get the firearms? especially in germany which isnt exactly a gunfriendly country.

did they steal them? did they borrow them? where they legal owners who lied on their federal forms?

come on how many people who are known anti-depressant users LIE on their federal gun forms DAILY!!!!???? how many alcoholics lie on their federal gun forms daily?????

there are more gunlaws than ANY OTHER LAWS ON THE BOOKS and the indiscrimanate killings continue. do i have an answer? hell yes! deeper background checks would be fine by me. medical records opened to scrutiny would be fine by me.

I'm not a proponent of any gun ban however like most here feel that if a crime is committed with a firearm then the punishment should be exponentially more severe. Obviously in this case it won't matter...

What we have to accept with an armed society is that guns are enablers. Just like the internet makes BBS posters "brave" it takes a ton more balls to walk up to someone and kill them with a knife/club/hands etc... than it does to blow them away from 15+ ft with a handgun. The media's glamorization of violence does not help the situation.

I'm probably going to buy a rifle and shotgun sometime in 2009 for home defense purposes. Will be fun to go to the shooting range with my son too. Hopefully I never will need to use them at home.

No shotguns or anything larger than a .22 at an indoor range. just fyi.

I agree on tougher penalties for firearm violations, not tougher gun legislation. If carrying was easier like in FL or TX, maybe "bad guys" would think twice.

The irony of this is that there is so much more and worse crime in MD and DC than in VA. The first two have draconian gun laws, while VA is rife with legal guns and CCW'ers. Worse yet, if you kill a cop in DC, you won't get executed and you'll go to prison in VA. If you do the same in MD, you could be sentenced to death, but they have a moratorium on exeuctions. Do any of that stuff in VA and you will be executed. If you get a life sentence, it really is for life. No parole in VA and they have mandatory minimums for gun crimes. Funny how that works.

Didn't MD and DC gripe awhile back about how the tougher laws and sentencing in VA were driving VA's criminals over their borders? One would think the solution to that would be painfully obvious...

I forgot about that. For a few years they had billboard signs warning of Project Exile, the gun crime mandatory minimum (5 yrs.), as soon as you drove into VA. Maybe it made a few thugs think twice. VA really is hardcore law and order. Buy and and carry all the guns you want. But screw up and you're going away for a while.

Now honestly, how would you know?

I submit that someone with the will to kill will kill regardless of the implement they choose.

Someone in Japan a few months back went on a kill crazy rampage with a butcher knife and killed just as many people.

are limited as to what type..& caliber
be squeaky clean...21 or older
lots of paperwork..
no wally mart to buy from..
you join a hunt club.. you need to be sponsored..
after being a member for 1 yr..you may buy your first gun,
want another..wait another yr..same drill
may only purchase ammo for gun registered..
you may own up to 14
ammo is limited..
problem for Germany and other places..you can buy anything in Poland ..
(black market)
drive right back..never be stopped...

shooter used a 9mm Beretta pistol...
all of his father's guns were secured in a safe..EXCEPT the one he kept in the bedroom...

most victims ..headshot, he was quite accurate.

Ouch- you don't ever want to run into someone with that sort of skill and the motivation and fortitude to exercise it.

Not sure an armed citizen would have even helped in such a case, unless the citizen managed to surprise the killer and get him with his back turned(which is actually fairly likely)

PS: Beretta pistol huh? Amazing that he remembered to disengage the safety before firing.

There are some people that are just not to be fked with.

He is apparently one of them.

Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of people with the sort of skill this bastard had are far more forgiving and stable.

lots of guns in Germany..
nothing like us..but I was suprised.
most are small cal. or hunting..
you take it to the range and right back home...
as for hunting..you get to blast what the Jaegermeister says you can blast..nothing more..
so you could have a throphy buck walk up ..and he says no..you don't.

It pisses me off that we no longer learn why these freaks do this. They all wimp out and off themselves after bringing the havoc.

Now, I'm not saying that he had a good REASON to do this. What I'm saying is, what if there was some outside influence that pushed a mentally crippled person the rest of the way? Maybe someone was blackmailing him, and that person also needs to be prosecuted? Maybe his neighbor was sneaking in and stealing from him to piss him off? Maybe his boss was raping him at lunch?

Sometimes, I cannot believe that some of these people snap without any outside force. If we had a person in shackles in jail, we might find some other evil out there as well. When they off themselves, we lose any knowledge as to why/how it happened. That's a big loss in my mind.

Once you're dealing with someone suicidal all bets are off.
Two years ago I had a guy take a shotgun off the rack outside and put a round through his neck (he had several shells on him). Was thoughtful of him not to make a mess on the floor or to take myself or a few other customers with him.
Turned out his brother was a customer, he came in and said he was sorry it happened at my place. Not one of my better days on the job.
