Confrontation in the South China Sea

"Because the vessels' intentions were not known, Impeccable sprayed its fire hoses at one of the vessels in order to protect itself," the Pentagon's statement said. "The Chinese crew members disrobed to their underwear and continued closing to within 25 feet."

The Chinese are testing the Obama admin to see if they lose focus of the special relationship between America and China. The Bush admin under similiar circumstanes kept focus on the larger issues between the countries and proved to be flexible. To which America and China had a good relationship duiring the Bush admin. This little incident will have long reaching effects on the Chinese American relationship oing forward.

OK, you're a Chinese transvestite shrimp fisherman, Americans start spraying you down with firehoses. What else are you supposed to think but "wet t-shirt contest". And everyone knows, the more you show the more likely you are to win.

China has a tradition of chest-puffing nonsense. China and Taiwan have been dancing this dance for many generations. It's a pageant. Sadly, America does not engage in "pretend" military operations for chest-puffing purposes. Unless China and America come to an understanding about this vast difference in cultures, an incident in our future will develop into an international problem. The US Navy is intolerant of game-playing using deadly machinery. China uses its ships for mostly this (game-playing) purpose.

SUPER..you mistake the Chinese for being fluffers. One has to remember that they are a tightly controlled state, and their NAVAL ships are not going to provoke the US Navy without a purpose.

How ironic that since 2001 the US Navy and Chinese military have had no major incidents. The all of a sudden the Chinese provoke an incident...Hmmmm coincidence or purposeful?

If they really wanted to mess with us, they could just threaten to stop buying our bonds. We'd be on bended knee, begging them for forgiveness in no time.

Let's see. We owe them lots of money and they are harassing us? I say we charge them $1 trillion dollars for reckless endangerment and harrassment of our forces and call it a day. That ought to cover it.

If they those Chinks stop buying our debt you won't have to worry about things like Social Security, Medicare, a Military let alone a government...Obama would be in office another 24 hours before the electricity would be turned off in America...the land of debt.

What? Most of the cold war was game playing.

US spy planes over the USSR and Russian bombers flying over Alaskan airspace...As for the Navy...US subs sometimes shadowed Soviet subs so close they could touch them. There is no practical reason to go that close other than to prove you can do it. Somtimes the results were not positive for either the shadowing sub or the "prey".

Be sure, it was a game: The Great Game Part 2.

When you lend someone a little money it is their problem to pay you back. When you lend someone a lot of money it is your problem they pay you back. The Chinese are not dumb and they are not going to go to war with their biggest customer and debtor. We on the other hand, well it is a fine mess we got ourselves into ain't it?

You misunderstand. I am not dissing or underestimating China. I am making a cultural observation. Pageantry means a lot to them. Posturing and grandstanding and symbolism and taunting and chest-pounding. The US Navy......not so much. America is non-cultural. Either it's time to fight, or not. They way we tell the difference is when a ship approaches us in a threatening matter, then it's time to fight.

Then again, they may be fluffers. At a minimum, we know they are sailors who undress to their underwear as a Navy ship approaches.

I have to agree with Superman here. China isn't in the business of picking fights it can't win and everyone knows a real fight with the U.S. Navy is a losing battle for themselves. China needs a good propaganda stunt once in a while and this one looks pretty benign. They get to beat up our image in their state-controlled media, know we'll do nothing about it and so it's sort of a win/no-loss for everyone. They all know China gets blasted in our "free" media on a regular basis.
