I always liked the looks of the TR7/TR8 and the X1/9.... the only thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger is probably the availability of parts.. probably not too easy to come by...

Owned a 1981 TR8 convertible from 1985-1988 - great car for it's time. Suspension was reasonable, quick for it's time, huge trunk and a glovebox that could hold a ton (as it was designed for airbags but didn't have them). Drove it all over San Diego and even up to Mammoth with cable chains once.
Other than a power-steering leak, no troubles whatsoever (1980 & 1981's were rare-ish, and were built in the newer factories - supposedly 1980 & 1981's were pretty trouble free). Didn't need much in parts, but a tonneau for the conv. top took months and months to come from England, via some special order from Victoria British in Kansas. Nice burble at idle, a turbine like whine when under way. Sold it to a Triumph collector in New Mexico who paid me about what I had paid 3 years and 25,000 miles before. I'd bet parts are hard to find now. Seem to remember just a few dozen 1981's were sold - they were the only ones with Triumph badges instead of stickers. It was a pretty well thought out car - even had little soft, tiny, pillow type pads on the center console/radio stack where your legs would eventually lean on long trips. I don't know about 180 - but it was fine up to an indicated 130 or so a couple of times on empty desert roads! |
