Ping is a low level 'Ya out thar good buddy?'. It uses a protocol called ICMP. Frequently blocked (meaning folks simply don't respond to it) on the internet. Frequently used on internal networks for 'can you hear me now?' type troubleshooting.

The only issue here is telling your software to quite bugging you about it.

I run my own web/email servers from a home office (yea I know I am nuts)
I keep a sharp eye on my edge routers, always amazed at the intrusions detected on a daily basis

I once brought up a new outward facing server unprotected for 24 hrs and was hosting furry boots on eBay! (my bad...never again!)

I run my own servers as well, but I gave up looking at the logs many years ago. I only look when I really need to . Until I installed a new firewall server, I had software that would automatically block an I.P. that sniffed certain ports. My firewall only has a handful of ports open (incoming), ping is not one of them.

I've never rated a thread, and typically don't notice them, but who gave a "geek thread" like this 5 stars? Since I "am/was" a networking/communications geek, Dave, I must point out that blocking "ports" will not stop pings as they are not port specific, but a different protocol ICMP (as posted above) verses TCP or UDP. I'm kinky as I've had intimate relationships with Checkpoint firewalls and Cisco gear after a LONG time relationship with IBM mainframes and front end processors (communications controllers). Sometimes I miss "being in the game"...but not often

Well, excuse me for lumping it all together. The point is, my server does not reply to pings.

$ ping ns1
PING ns1 (192.168.0.33) from 192.168.0.34 : 56(84) bytes of data.

--- ns1 ping statistics ---
16 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
