Exactly what I was thinking... I don't even ride a motorcycle, but after reading the posts from the guys on this board who do and who are adamant about wearing actual gear, I find myself noticing more and more riders in flip flops etc.

That's a bummer, but some of those comments are pretty funny.

I think it'd be worth the $60 mirror to point, laugh and tell him he should stay in his own lane.. but that's just the ******* in me. Having just replaced one of those mirrors I don't think ripping all 4 #2 phillips heads out would take that much force.

I've started racing motocross in third grade, and have ridden of the street since 2003. One of the first thing I learned is the importance of safety gear.
At least he was wearing jeans! I've seen too many idiots in shorts. ![]() Looks like a door glass too. But I wouldn't laugh, you've never come in too hot on any spirited runs?

![]() Honestly the sympathetic in me would have to go make sure he's ok and if he needs help with the bike, or medical attention. And yes I've hit a corner too hot on a fun run or two, I understand how it happened.

I've been hit head-on. Double compound fracture of my lower left leg. Isn't fun. He looks like he got away lucky.
Going to the dragon with R Gruppe on April 4. Hopefully won't see anything to that effect or be involved!!

Clearly the bike was in the oncoming lane - however, look at how much road is still available for the truck to maneuver into. Why wasn't the driver of the truck watching where he was going, and make at least a small attempt to avoid the accident.
After driving in other countries, I have come to appreciate other drivers that are constantly looking out for the other guy, and making room for everyone. This country seems to think they own their half of the road.

The truck was damaged a lot more than you think. The bike made pretty good contact to the doors and sill.

Notice how little the bike is leaning prior to impact. It appears as if he was afraid to really lean it over, a common malady among inexperienced riders.
"Lane errors", as they are known, are one of the leading causes of motorcycle accidents. Riders who missjudge and wind up in someone else's lane, most commonly a head-on or sideswipe like this. In our country, it's the right hand corners (of course) that will ruin your day like this. A really good rule of thumb is to go after them somewhat less aggressively than the left handers, where running wide might see you off in the grass or gravel (if you are lucky) or the ditch or guardrail if you are a little less lucky. Take it easy on that driver. I'm sure the rider came out of nowhere, giving that driver no time whatsoever to react. Even if the driver did see him, I'm sure he assumed the rider would lean the bike and negotiate the corner just as the guy in front of him had. It's way too easy to second-guess how much time he had to react, and it's impossible to judge the speed they were travelling from the stop-action. A lot of the local SQUIDS ride with those armored jeans, with the kevlar sections and body armor sewn in. They are probably every bit as good as most true riding pants, plus they let the kids continue to look cool (very important...). At any rate, they are far better than the assless chaps most of my Harley buddies wear.

I agree with Jeff. I can't tell you how many times I have heard of accidents where the rider panicked and instead of leaning into the curve, hit their brakes, bike stands up and they drive straight off the road.

Looks like he had special shoes that break away during impact, much like a crashing Indycar sheds parts to disperse energy.
The SUV driver should have put it in reverse and run over the bike a few times, and maybe slap the rider around a bit. |

Give the bike some room? I don't think the SUV expected the collision, and in the last frame the SUV is on the outer white line.
