"ethnic" motherly instincts to feed everyone.
ok. i have been working some strange hours. had to work yesterday by myself, so i didnt have time to eat. i grabbed a turkey sandwich for the commute home. when i got home, i found my MIL teaching my wife how to cook some favorite dishes. i barely get through the door when the MIL forces this humongous bowl of noodles in front of me, with a "EAT!" i sat with it smoldering in front of me, and i check my email. i could barely force down a few spoonfuls before i topped off. the turkey sandwich was enough.
i have the same situation when i visit my friend's italian grandmother. i should start sneaking through the back door. my old room-mate's korean mom? forget about it, she gets borderline violent with the force feeding. cracks me up. what about the motherly figures in your life? i love my MIL. she is a great lady. (shhhh, i cook better than she does tho)

My wife and MIL, too. It's a very strong Chinese cultural instinct.

It's what mothers do.
It's happened to my wife now. Although it would be nice to have a plate prepared for me when I get home I prefer that she does not. She puts way more food on it than I care to ingest.

My Grandmother was from Hungary, when she would cook dinner it was a roast for us red meat lovers, a chicken some form of fish, all at the same time. We would go over for dinner on sunday and eat till we were about to pop. then she would bring out the sweets. If you left my Grandmothers table hungry it was your fault, and you usually had a headache from her smacking you in the back of the head, for not eating enough.
I miss my Grandmom.

Food is hugely important in Chinese culture. In fact the traditional greeting is "chi le ma?" which translates to "have you eaten?"
My mother (not Chinese) was a terrible cook and both grandmothers were dead before I came along so I didn't get any of that food thing directly. |

i thought about putting "SEK FAAN" on my license plate.
it means (or is used to ask), "have you eaten?" literally it means "eats rice". this is cantonese. oh, i forgot about my greek neighbors in the city. i once helped them with a downed fence and graffiti cleanup. i could barely swing my hammer, i was STUFFED!

My MIL is French "hillbilly" and she feeds me every time I go over to her house. Now that I'm a vegetarian, she always has a huge bowl of fresh fruit for me. No complaints here at all...

Nice. I love Provencal cooking. Does she speak it as well?

No French speaking except for a few words here and there. My MIL's family came from Canada (fur trappers) and they think muskrat is a delicacy!
