Graduation gift ideas please

My nephew is graduating high school this spring and I would like to get him something but am at a loss as to what that might be (other than beer and hookers). He and I are very close, so I would like it to be something he will remember (in a positive way) for a long time to come. Any suggestion?

A few years back I gave my nephew a US Gold coin, a Double Eagle as I recall...and a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution. He has always cherished both.

If you don't like that idea I'm sure he'd like your '87 Carrera

The only graduation gift I remember getting was a pen and pencil set. And not in a good way... Other than that I'd be hard pressed to tell you anything I received.

An old 911 or an old water cooled Porsche you could help him restore?

All I got for my graduation was cash. I remembered it. My parents bought me a laptop. Depending on how much you are looking to spend, maybe that or a nice 32" lcd tv for the dorm room.

I would go for a nice watch. My parents bought me a watch years ago and I still wear it years later. Its only an ESQ but it means something to me.

Most kids want money...especially if they're going off to college. How 'bout a simple engraved sterling silver money clip with an appropriate amount of cash in it? Or set up an IRA for him and receipt for a first contribution/deposit (assuming he has worked this year)? If he stuck with it from a young age he'd be sure to remember you when he retired early

I second the watch idea. Can't beat the gift that a person actually wears and looks at multiple times each day.

Great ideas! Thanks guys. If you have any more let me know.
He will be going to college so I am staying away from cars right now as I don't think he can have one on campus the first year.
Money or stocks etc. I will probably save for college graduation.
I had originally thought a nice watch would be good; something he could keep, get his butt to classes on time, etc. Then I thought "would that be cool for an 18 year old, or would it be an old guy gift". Jury is still out.

Watch idea is great, but....most of the kids that my 20 y.o. step son hang out with rely on their cell phones. Some of the early-mid 20-somethings are beginning to loook at watches as a lifestyle/fashion statement. Kinda depends on the kid. The guys in the aviation school, for example all wear watches.

This is a good point. Almost no one I know wears a watch. If you want to be hip I would say go with some type of electronic device.
