You may want to try Pam. Yes the vegetable spray. I had problems with Swallows. In Cali it is illegal to disturb their nests once the close the opening. So for about a week I was out before and after work washing the little mud nests down. Those fellas can through mud like you can't believe.
Well the swallows keep the pests away and I did not want to hurt them. Called the animal rescue folks and they said try washing away the incomplete mud nest and than spray Pam on it. Birds went away in about two days. They slowly got the message. What was funny was the first day I came home and there are these two swallows sitting on the eve. They look like they have been preening the heck out of there feathers. Must have been to get the veggie oil off. But they had the most pi$$ed off look on there pretty little faces. Worked like a charm!

Do mothballs bother birds? Maybe clean it out and then stuff the mothballs in there?
