Those carcasses will be consumed by other critters, the eco-system will benefit from their passing, none of it will be wasted.

Shrug.

I don't varmint hunt, but i don't get all bent out of shape about those that do.

I have spent the last few days reading multiple articles on witch round is better but most articles only deal with comparing the round for hunting. From what i have read the .17 has a flatter trajectory and is more accurate outside 100yds but is about 30% $ more. I know there not cheep rounds in comparison with the .22 lr but i think something with alittle more punch will keep me enjoying the rifle for longer.

This is my first firearm and im looking for a small caliber bolt action rimfire rifle for use only at the range. I have narrowed my gun down to the Savage arms 93BTVS but i am now stuck on witch round. I like to bump up to a .223 but it's not in the budget for a graduating college student with a poor economy.

Thanks

First of all, you compare the .22 WMR with the .17 caliber bullet. I can buy the comparison, since both are small caliber rounds, but what I don't buy is the fact that you later call a WMR a "long rifle" via:

"I know there not cheep rounds in comparison with the .22 lr but i think something with alittle more punch will keep me enjoying the rifle for longer. "

A WMR is NOT a "long rifle". It is significantly more powerful. A .17 is useful for varmint hunting, such as rats... and while a .22 WMR is usefull for this as well: It can kill a raccoon dead with one shot. I know this- I've done it. A .22 long rifle just kind of pisses off a raccoon.

-I don't recommend getting one of these animals upset because they have a mouth full of nasty teeth and can usually kill a dog twice their weight....

Yes they burrow holes that livestock, horses and cattle can break legs in. Happens often, many ranchers will openly invite you to thin the herds in some cases they will pay for 22LR ammo.

This great fun! with a 22LR early in the season with young or new shooters before they get spooky, the eagles and coyotes get the benefits, the fields will be clean the next morning.

Several small ranching communities sponsor big hunts they invite safety minded hunters, feed them lunch and let the culling begin.

This is not for everyone. It's a western thing.

remember jerry Clower story about "Knock him out, John." ? Coon hunting tale where they send John up the tree to knock a treed 'coon out. Coon very PO'd. Coon attacks, John. John shouts down for the guys on the ground to shoot the 'coon. They yell back they're afraid they might hit John.

John replies "Just shot up here amongst us...one of us needs some relief."

Guess ya hadda be there.:D

Ground hogs here are a nuisance to my bro in law as he is a farmer. I'm not a hunter, but when I saw what they do to his crops, it became more acceptable to me. They eat his crops, dig holes big enough to break a cows or horses leg, and make the combine get stuck on the mounds. I love animals but these things multiply like rabbits and cause havoc in the life of a small farmer. We go out in the evenings, set lawn chairs up in the truck bed, and BS until one stands up. Some nights we don't even get to shoot but we always have a great time. Kinda like fishing.
