Pickup truck mufflers...what gives?

Whats up with the loud pipes on pickup trucks lately? I'm not talking about cool restored Chevy S10's from the 60's, I'm talkin late model Dodge POS landscaping or run-of-the-emill contractor type trucks that the guy thinks should sound like a Hemi Cuda..

I have these guys driving by my house all the time and when I turn to look at what I think is the Cobra replica or 'Vette from down the street its just the crap '1998 Silverado with a lawnmower in the back!

just a new pet peeve ofmine...

This is what I mean:

Ok the loud pipes on chevys are just a personal taste thing. The driver likes it. No different than performance pipes on a 911. Now the diesels get a nice HP bump with a bigger pipe and it sounds good. All about personal taste IMHO.

The bed of the pickup usually resonates with the loud pipes. Makes for the ride from hell on the interstate. Of course, usually these guys have a loud stereo blasting, so they won't notice.

I don't get it either. Loud exhaust belongs on a performance vehicle. On these trucks, the pipes and maybe a K&N filter are the only performance modifications. Here in CA they are all cat back exhaust - they may look like duals out back, but usually they are split from one pipe.

What I really love is the crappy job the muffler shops are doing putting on these duals. The tips usually rust within a year and stuff starts sagging and dangling when the trucks go down the interstate. LOL ...

Get off my lawn!!!!

Seriously, relax will ya'? I've heard a lot of trucks that sound pretty damn good. And the diesel systems actually add a significant amount of HP, you can't say that for most sports car systems.

Maybe its a NE city vs. country/Bubba thing? I live in Boston and think its just as annoying as a Civic that has 75P on tap with the rattle can exhaust. I can see any sports/performance/muscle car having some sound but what's next minivans? I just dont see the point of it all. Aftermarket suppliers are making a mint....

Maybe the guy driving the POS Silverado is looking at your silly little German car that doesn't even have a cup holder and can't figure out where you put your spit cup!

I'll take a modified V8 or diesel truck sound over my neighbor's S2000 any day. No matter how cool the car, you can't make a 4-cylinder sound like anything other than amplified flatulence.

Yeah but you ever pulled up next to one of them while in your car? You could go deaf from the sound.

Wow, that was a bad typo, The S-10 was a POS!!

I meant the 60-70's C-10

90% of the cars and trucks with loud exhausts don't have the performance to back it up and that bugs me (like the 911 I saw the other day with a muffler bypass on the street?). I wouldn't always judge a book by it's cover though...my truck looks like a stock boring diesel with a little louder exhaust but it will beat most anything that lines up next to it.

I hear ya! Mine has a little rumble to it, nothing like the video posted above, but she moves along pretty nicely. Not the fastest thing on the road, but not the slowest, either.

I love the sound of a loud V8... doesn't matter what kind of vehicle.

Be glad you don't have Bubb Rubb and some of his buds in your neighborhood:

Yeah it always makes me laugh thinking that my tow vehicle that just towed two cars and gear to the track is every bit as fast as the full on race cars it just towed...at least in the straigt line

Sure. I've also had the joy of a Harley, a Mustang, an M3, and a host of other vehicles that are too damn loud. Whine too much and you'll have the man telling you your 911 is too loud too. You take away someone else's rights, they take away yours, pretty soon we're all screwed.

Many of those trucks with the cat back exhaust are also chipped and though they may not win any stop light contests vs. an air cooled 911 they certainly will not get dusted - all the while carrying the lawnmower and the shovel & rake in the PVC holders.

There's a lot of chipped diesels with big exhausts that can show an air-cooled 911 their tail-lights.

Thinking of trucks as performance vehicles? Not my thing.
