Police officers taunted after shooting.

I was reading a story on MSNBC.com about the 4 officers (3 dead at this point) who were shot in Oakland, CA. As if the shootings themselves are not disturbing enough, it turns out people were standing around at the scene of one of the shootings taunting the police officers.

What a sick world.

Read that story earlier when they reported all cops were still alive. Bummer. The story I read said the taunting was possibly feedback from the fatal shooting by the SanFran Transit cop last month.

Nonetheless, Oakland is a pit and hearing about the actions of the crowd isn't surprising.

Glad all those strict gun-control laws in Calif. are working...

Wow, the guy took down 2 SWAT cops (edit: 3 actually. 2 killed and 1 wounded) from the team coming in to get him. Presumably with automatic weapons, flash bangs, and full body armor.

I'm gonna have to find a lot more detailed account of this incident.

Found this:

"According to unofficial reports, the SWAT team officers searched the building. But when they entered an apartment, they approached a closet where the suspect was hiding. He opened fire through the door, killing two officers and wounding a third. That third officer fired back, killing the gunman."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/03/21/MNVB16KU75.DTL

Anyway, there is enormous enmity between cops and minorities in many of our inner cities. Cops really "harass" the living hell out of Blacks in my city, so this taunting doesn't surprise me. (this doesn't mean i condone it- it's just not surprising)

RIP to the fallen cops.

PS: Looks like the guy had some sort of "assualt rifle." Wow....they're illegal in California, didn't the criminal know he was breaking the law?

You mean that criminals might keep illegal guns after the govt collects them from all the law-abiding citizens? Say it isn't so.

The CA rules are silly, as is the media's reporting. There are plenty of legal "assault rifles" depending on how you define it. You can buy ARs legally, just have to limit to 10 rnd magazine and if you have a removable one it has to be removed by a "tool" (a bullet tip counts as a tool).

He could have been using a legal weapon. Which is even worse, as it'll just start another round of, "we have to ban everything"...

First of all, RIP to those officers...simply tragic. I would suggest that there's not a single person on this board who's never broken a "law", it just a matter of which ones and the degree imo. Despite all the hysterics, there is NO CHANCE of what you're suggesting happening in this country imo. No more so than eliminating abortions, drugs, poverty, terrorism, etc. ....just ain't gonna happen and it's simply political rhetoric imo.

They should have just lit the building on fire and waited for him to come out.

Let's see if I get flamed for this comment.

Well, it was an apartment building, other people lived there- so it's not very realistic to think that could be done.

Besides, the Philly PD tried that once- it didn't work out too good.

This 'used' to be a neighborhood until the Philly PD came along and pretended it was Dresden...

Oakland pays well but has openings they can't fill. Oakland officers enjoy NO support from the community OR the Mayor and Chief of Police.

I had to drive through Oakland once on the way to the airport. Pit doesn't begin to describe the impression I was left with.
I didn't look back so I wasn't turned into a pillar of salt.

I wonder how he got to be so quick and deadly with firearms. Did he have military training or perhaps he got his at home in the livingroom "playing" videogames?

Not sure what part of Philly it was, but last time I was there I saw a few neighborhoods near the airport where that would have been considered urban renewal. Still, not as bad as East L.A.

It's pretty shocking to me that he managed to kill 2 swat cops and seriously wound a third by firing through a door.

These cops typically wear armor that will stop most rifle rounds.

I thought this guy probably has military training right away as well, but i did a google last night and saw no mention of it. I'm sure more details will come out quickly.

Large swaths of the city could burn down and i guess i'd have to agree it would be an improvement.

Well chances are the media will only focus on his use of guns and the typical knee-jerk reporting. Unless this guy was trained professionally it's some pretty incredible shooting for a street thug against trained police, especially in Oakland. That's what bothers me about the video games but who's trying to control them?

Have you ever been to "East LA"? Not watching movies, but actually driven there and spent any time there?

Video games don't train people how to handle real weapons. That is more "knee jerk", uninformed BS.

Don't blame guns.
Don't blame video games.

Blame the perp.
Blame his parents.
Blame his criminal friends.
