There are so many Et-OH is bad fuel posts here in OT right now, that I decided to cut up the fuel filter when I replaced it in der Vanergone -- here it is:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322085658.jpg ] Yes, it is Bosch (but made in Spain). Now, let us examine what 30,000 miles of bad, nasty Ethanol laden Oregon fuel have done to it... The Unwrapping: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322085749.jpg Now, I will find the very worst, nastiest spot on this strip of media -- ah, here it is: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322085843.jpg |
Ethanol is more harmful to metal components since it contains that pesky hydroxyl group. Though it also makes Ethane into a liquid and more suitable for transport/storage, it also is more corrosive to (especially Aluminum) fuel system components. Or partially filled steel fuel tanks. Paper would not be harmed or know the difference.
The other issue is that it likes water. This can be good and bad. The ethanol can act as an emulsifier so that the water does not pool and end up going into the engine in one big gulp. More like free water injection. The bad part is that the water is in there to begin with and it is hard to tell how much since water and ethanol are miscible IIRC. |
Ethanol blend fuels are more likely to corrode the fuel tank (which is metal); thus, contrary to your stmt. above, such residues would be trapped in this filter media. That none showed up, indicates there are likely no problems in the tank (nor in the rubber hoses ahead of the filter) caused by Et-OH.
I'm sure people (especially CISsies) are having some problems, but it seems that it is being blown out of proportion by some posters. |
I thought I did say that the fuel tank would be subjected to more corrosive 'forces'.
I misunderstood why you were looking at the fuel filter. :o |
no problem
next up - fuel hoses! |
I am replacing the fuel hose and thought I'd send the injectors in to get cleaned also.
Any thoughts on how this injector looks? To me, the circumference seems pretty "grody" tho I'm not sure if that is important or not. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322948888.jpg A close-up of the injector orifice itself seems ok (tho obviously, this visual inspection is no substitute for a spray pattern test). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322948952.jpg |
Any thoughts on the injector or on where to send them for cleaning?

Thx, Byron. I discovered that the places that do diesel injectors don't seem to do gas engine injectors, and vice-versa

the CV joints were not making any noise, but since I did not know how old they were, I thought some preventative maintenance would be wise (I sure don't want them to lock up way back in the boonies)...

Our old VW van
Here is my '69 VW van, way back in 1985.

I called it my "babe magnet"!!!

:)
Nice job on those fuel rails. I have to do this on my 85 Doka. Wondering why there are no clamps at the injectors? Are they one way only hose barbs? Len :) |
Thinking about a Westy to do a Subie conversion
Interested in how your Westy is turning out. I am looking at selling my 27ft Class C RV and getting a Westy to do a Subaru 2.5 or 3.0 conversion with. I pull a light race car (1,500 lbs with car, trailer and gear) and would need/want the extra power and reliability.
