Modern Civilization is a 2 edged sword. On one hand you have all these wonderful technical devices like TV sets, PC's, Central Air Conditioning, Washing machines, Refrigerators, Autos etc. On the other hand to enjoy those luxuries there is a price to pay and that is environmental degradation. You can not have one without the other. End of story.
The idea is to do the least damage as possible to the environment for the highest standard of living possible. The ringer in the equation is the huge increase in world population, at some point the environment will collapse under the weight of such huge population increases.
