Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems
HealthDay
By HealthDay - Wed May 27, 8:49 PM PDT

- WEDNESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking too much cola can increase the risk of a muscle problem called hypokalemia, experts warn.

In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

Two of the patients were pregnant women who were admitted to hospital with low potassium levels. One was a 21-year-old woman who drank up to three liters of cola a day and complained of fatigue, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. An electrocardiogram revealed she had a heart blockage, and blood tests showed she had low potassium levels, the researchers explained in a news release.

The second pregnant patient, who'd consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.

Both patients made a rapid and full recovery after they stopped drinking cola and took oral or intravenous potassium. The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.

Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola -- glucose, fructose and caffeine -- can contribute to hypokalemia.

"The individual role of each of these ingredients in the pathophysiology of cola-induced hypokalemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients," Elisaf said. "However, in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose."

However, "caffeine-free cola products can also cause hypokalemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea," Elisaf said.

how do you drink that much of any fluid a day? unless you were really active in the desert i cant see how you could even process that much fluid.

i'd be standing in the can all day if i ever had that much. i've been known to finish a half rack of beer before in one day, but i sure cant do that everyday

I can't even imagine drinking that much liquid in a day, what is it they recommend? 8 12 oz glasses of water a day? 7 liters is almost 2 gallons of fluid.

I drink a lot of water through the day, but it's 90f-100f in our shop for most of the year and I still don't drink 7 liters of water let alone soda (or pop as we'd call it in ohio).....it just boggles my mind, a super sized McDoalds coke is what? 32 oz? A 2 liter is about 67oz......so that's like drinking 7 super sized cokes a day.....

"They" recommend a MINIMUM of 8 - 12 oz glasses a day.

I drink a LOT of water every day. Like close to 2 gallons a day. I take two 1 liter bottles of water in my work truck each morning along with a stainless container with 1.5 liters in it. They are all empty by 1-2PM.

I drink about a liter from the time I get up, run, work out, and report to work.

Then from 2- bed time easily another 3 liters. Now that I think about it I drink 6-7.5 liters a day. Almost 4 bottle of soda worth of water..... yes I piss a lot. Like every 30-60 minutes all day long.

My last kidney stone was in 1999 when my doc told me it was due to dehydration working in the Florida sun. A desire to never have another stone will motivate you like you will not believe.

It's extra shocking to me that this is probably regular (sugar) soda they're consuming, so the amount of daily sugar intake is just mid-boggling. They're sure to be diabetic on top of all the other issues mentioned.

I would bet they were hypernatremic (high sodium) along with the hypokalemia. I would also guarantee they had osteoporosis. Carbonated soft drinks are freakin' poison

ANYTHING in modration is probably fine

rec daily is 2 litres of water a day

caffeiene is a diretic (sp?) so dehydrates you
caff , found in, coffee, tea and choclates

even too much water is bad, somone died a while ago, found he'd drunk so much water it had flushed all the natural salts out of his body

Not to mention the fact that in the two cases singled out they were both pregnant! Those kids are going to need IV soda when they are born! I suppose a 'cola baby' is better than a 'crack baby'

Awesome.
I was just in the hospital 5 times in the last two weeks for hypophosphatimia.

Which basically means my phosphate levels were low enough to kill me - basically the same symptoms listed above. Potassium was low too, but not that bad.

Was a fun 2 weeks, oh yes.

Anyway I'm good now I had a bug causing nausea making me not eat at all... oops.
