But Mike, coming up with this stuff - attempting to solve the problems, make predictions based on prior knowledge, building connections with what we know from pop culture and the arts - well, that's the stuff that makes LOST so damned fun. Sure, you can appreciate the show on the basic plot level, but you can also do that with CSI or Cold Case or a number of other inferior shows; LOST is different.

Heck, I have been trained to analyze - it's my bread and butter... so I'll continue on my merry way, thank you very much. :)

I think you misunderstood my intentions..
I'm not trying to ignore the complexity, nor am I trying to ignore the clues hints and hidden things. I'm just trying to keep a bit grounded in my extrapolations...the writers have proven to know more about their story than I do ;)
The surprises that they toss out are often completely unknown and unknowable beforehand, so trying to find hidden meaning in a scene is a fool's effort...they are all but guaranteed to write something 180 degrees opposite of what any of us could imagine. They have that annoying power...

They sprinkled more than enough other stuff in that can be traced around, examined, compared, and otherwise scrutinized. It obviously keep the numerous blogs and websites busy. Yes, the research done on the statue is interesting, but if one goes back to the first appearance, and reads what the writers were claiming back then, they simply wanted a statue leg that was "different".
Here, from the horse's mouth:

This was only a year ago. So, they went from wanting a "weird" statue, to getting heat about it, to driving the blogosphere crazy, to showing the statue a second time...this time, full of enough clues to drive anyone to Tawaret eventually...which is exactly what happened.

I don't think they had that connection planned when we first saw the statue. I think they took this anonymous "weird statue", and made it a "5 Years Into LOST Full of Cultural Connections Statue", because that's what people expect.

Oh...as for who Jacob is...we've already met him:

^ Looks like it could be an alternate cover to "Against the Day"...

I love how they worked the "Back to the Furture" reference in. The Opie and Anthony show always talk about "Lost" or "Back to the Future" rules of time travel. Just when it all looks figured out by Miles, Hugo throws up a roadblock. LOL

i knew ben wasnt dead. i guess im a genius :-)

tonight was the 2nd time i heard Patsy Cline played on this show. wonder if there is any significance to that...???????

Cline died in a plane crash.....

Hugo was basically speaking as the voice of the fans; the writers read the fan pages, blogs, and forums to see what the fans are discussing. Sometimes they throw in a reference to have fun with the fans; they've done this a few times over the course of the show - remember Dr. Ardst?

GREAT episode tonight. Really fantastic. And we actually got some answers, to boot! We finally saw The Temple, we found out what Sawyer said to Kate on the helicopter, we found out what Kate did with Aaron - and it even looks like the show is reintroducing the "what the hell is with Claire?" storyline.

In the preview of next week's show, it looked like Linus was on the pier, with a gun, in 2007; so maybe they will be reintroducing the Desmond/Penny storyline as well.

It's now clear that Ben had no expectation of Locke coming back to life once he got to the Island... that look he gave him was priceless.

A few new questions, though: When Richard takes Ben, one of the Others says, "we shouldn't do this without asking Ellie (Eloise) or Charles (Whidmore)." Richards reply is "I don't answer to them." So, who does Richard answer to? Jacob? The Island? or... my prediction: Daniel Farraday?

Also, Richard says that Ben will "lose his innocence." What the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm sure it's a literary reference, but I'll trust smolsiuk to find it for me.

Speaking of the Temple, how much do you want to bet it's the "magic box" we were discussing earlier?

Also, considering that Ellie and Charles were mentioned within the same breath, I think it's possible that Charles Whidmore could be Daniel Farraday's father.

Ideas?
