Any of you guys still love to drive fast??
That last thread about speeding tickets got me thinking of the good old days. I have been a habitual speeder my whole life. I am getting older, and havn't had a ticket in a few years now, but I used to love to attempt to set the land speed record on long trips.
Back when I was a kid, points from speeding tickets did not transfer from state to state. We used to travel from Pittsburgh to Daytona 5-6 times a year, and I did the trip regularly in 12-13 hours. I would always keep a couple hundred extra dollars to pay tickets on the spot, and would'nt speed in Pennsylvania, ( that way , I would not loose my license). These were always fun trips. I did it in a corvette, a couple of different hopped up camaros, a mustang gt, but the two absoulte best times I ever made on that trip was in an 83 Honda civic, and one other time in a 96 camry. It is way easier to run 90-100 mph for 12 hours in a nice quiet jap car, than at 4500 rpm , screaming exhuast, and your feet cooking from the headers in an old hot rod. I have only done a couple of shorter trips in a 911, and while quite capable of running real fast, I think it draws to much attention, and the arresting officer, I am sure would take into account the roll bar, seats, and harnesses while he was writing the ticket. Surpirnsingly enough, I only recieved maybe three or four tickets ,and probably made the trip 30 times or more. None of those tickets were at full clip, so I would pay my ticket, get back on the road, and hammer down. I used to think that I would make a good cannonballer, but now days , there would probably be jail time for such offenses, and you would at least loose your drivers license. Ahh the good olde days!!

In New Zealand we loose the car for 28 days if we are caught doing more than 40 kms (I guess 28mph) over the limit. It doesn't seem to slow anybody down though. If you drive at the limit on the open road around here someone will sit on your bumper tooting for you to get out of the way LOL.

Fred you worry about getting busted for speeding in Pa? Last weekend I was running down the Pa. Turnpike, doing 15 over and was passed by little old ladies with blue hair.

I pretty much have given up speeding on public roads except for the 'normal' 5-10 km over that the police seem to allow. I go to the track now for the b*lls out stuff. It's a LOT cheaper for a track day than the ticket and insurance hike would be. And maybe I'm not in as much of a rush anymore?

My last speeding ticket (that went on my license) was on the PA Turnpike on my bike for going 79 in a 65 zone, only vehicle on the road, clear, dry conditions. What a criminal. Last ticket (didn't go on my license) was for 89 in a 70 zone on I-10 in Blythe, CA, in the middle of the Mojave Desert, no other cars on the road. Just amazing these tax collectors pull this $hit when real dangers on the road go ignored.

I do the New Jersey to Michigan trip at least twice a year. On I-80 in PA, it seems that 75-80 MPH is the average speed with few State troopers. However, once I get into Ohio, I slow way down as their State Police is everywhere. That being said, I have slowed down overall compared to the way I used to drive in my 20's & 30's. I guess it's just part of maturity and self awareness. Now, I much rather get my speed fix on the track.

You know you're in trouble when the police officer walks up to you and says, "Do you have someone you can call to come and pick you up?"

There used to be this guy I knew who liked to drive his Boxster 135mph on the 520 bridge deck here in Seattle late at night. Said goodbye to that fella a while back, and I'm glad I did.

I drive around 5 MPH over on most roads, except in school zones as they are known targets for LE.
I would prefer to feel the acceleration when I am in the 911 so I tend to do short bursts through the first 3 gears. Obviously, you COULD go over the speed limit by the top of 3rd. On the highway I pretty much stick to the right lane whenever possible so as not to draw attention and I let the other folks that want to drive faster go on by. I have had my share of tickets for various offences over the years including 2 in a 3 month span in the 911. DOH!!!!!

Depends on what you call fast, I guess...I like to cruise about 10 mph above the pack average. Haven't had a ticket in decades. My two advantages are driving a 4.0 Ford Ranger that is invisible to cops and a V-1. Of course, stay alert!

Hello, my name is Steve, and I'm a habitual speeder.
I've actually gotten a lot better in the last 5-8 years. In the last 2-3 months, I've gotten really good about it. I'm not hypermiling, but I have been playing a game with my scangauge and my daily drives, "how good can I make my mileage without dying of boredom or getting run over." I'm up to 27-29mpg from 23-25mpg. I get passed like I'm standing still on the freeways where the traffic is going 70-80 and the speed limit is 60. I'm usually doing less than 65. I used to be the one going 80. When I had the 911 it was 80-90, and if the conditions (traffic, visibility, etc....) permitted, I'd blast up to 120 or so.

A few years ago, I was "tuning" my Aston Martin DB4 along the top of the Grapevine between LA and Bakersfield. After a hard run, I pulled over at Gorman and a minute or two later a CHP pulls in behind me and says he saw me from the other side of the freeway and said "You were going just about as fast as you could weren't you?". He didn't have a radar on me. I replied "Officer, if I was going as fast as I could, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now". It was like 7AM on a Sunday, and he told me to hold it down. No ticket.

Hmm at 17 I have two warnings and one verbal warning. 2 werent for speeding tho. The speeding one I know he didnt have the radar on and Im not really sure were he was but I know I was close to 80 when he clocked it. Of course it was an empty road. and I have a Boyscout tag on the car and an OHP cadet lawmen sticker on the car.
I do frequent 5-10 over on I40 though. Going to get a V1 when I have the funding. |

I had a similar reply when a cop in an unmarked Camaro tried to get me to race him, I woudn't take the bait and he lit me up when I pulled away from a green light too fast. His first words were, "So you're gonna let some kid in a Camaro bait you into streetracing?" I replied, "Officer, if I had wanted to race you, you wouldn't have caught me." After a field sobriety test and some car talk, he gave me a ticket for no front plate.

With traffic cameras, laser speed guns and the cost of insurance nope it's no longer worth it to see what she will do. Been there and done that.

I normally drive within 5-7 MPH of the max speed on the highway and at or under in all other circumstances. I've never had a speeding ticket and don't intend to earn one.
But I love to drive fast. I love the way it feels when every sense is hyper alert and you are 100% at the task of driving. I love the sound of the engine when it sings, I love the way telephone poles blip past like a picket fence when you go really, really fast. I was found myself (in an undisclosed location, in a car I no longer have) on a road where I could see for miles. Literally miles as the road dropped down and crossed a valley. No cars, no cross roads and I really let the car run hard. When it couldn't give any more, all I wanted was more. More speed, More!!! I screamed in rage because there was no more. The car would only go about 160. No business driving like that on a public road, no matter how deserted. I know that, and that's exactly what a whole bunch of people will chime in and say. But I still yearn for that speed. That rush. But I always settle in the slow lane 5-7 mph over the speed limit and drone along. Law-abiding and bored as hell. The only entertainment is watching the nanny-mom-wagon with the lady yapping on the cell phone, holding a diet coke and putting on her makeup at the same time while flinging her two-ton yuppy-puppy taxi down the highway. That always reminds me of who the lowly speed limits are set for. The common denominator who really does not have the attention span or skill set to operate a vehicle even at that speed... angela

For me - driving fast in a straight line is sort of fun for short periods, but nothing more. Driving fast in curves is where the fun is. Alas, I don't get much of either in daily driving. Think I'm going to resume AX'ing this summer.
