Nut Removers
I suspect the title may be keeping some folks from clicking on this thread. I'm talking about the nut/bolt removers that look like a socket where the inside is flower shaped. I'm the newest convert. These things are amazing.
![]() I was taking the wheels off of my wifes car but came across a stubborn nut. They are 17mm nuts. I ended up pounding a 16mm 6pt socket onto the nut and when I put a breaker bar on it, the outside of the nut became round. I remembered seeing these things before and went to HD and bought a set. Wow, I put the thing on the nut and turned and the nut came right off. Wow is all I can say. If you don't have a set, you should get some.

Craftsman makes 'em as well...one set has a cool tist...say you're trying to take off a nut from a long threaded bolt They make a set open all the way through, going over a threaded bolt. you apply the force to remove with an open end or a crescent wrench...Think Sears calls these "bolt-outs"...
Same principle...yep, they work slick. Especially after applying some PB Blaster...

I have the "bolt out" ones from Sears, as sold on TV by BoB Vila, they flat out work. I wish they were around 30 y/o.

I'm wondering what kind of wrenches/sockets you're using prior to needing these devices(?). Have I been doing something wrong not to have a need for them in (gasp) 50 years of nut removal?

I think the previous folks that put the lugnut on did it with an impact. The nuts are aftermarket and are small diameter, and soft. I think it was a combination of things that led to it. I also don't have any heat to put on the nut. That probably would have helped. I've never actually used heat to get a nut/bolt out. I normally do pretty well getting things apart too, but then I only have about 22 years of nut removal exp.
