Outdoor Lightiing

Part of my backyard during the day.

Same view with the CFL floods turned on. I'm thinking of adding 8-10 more to the left and right of the picture.

Floods along the walk path would be pretty nice too.

Some strategically placed LEDS along that walkway would do nicely. I love your backyard btw.

Agree that you could add some path lighting (not too much) that might also touch the boulders. It might be just the picture but the current tree lights appear to be focusing on the tree trunk. Try adjusting them to split between the trunk (higher off the ground) and the canopy. Just a thought.

My exact thoughts. Although beautiful, the lights could be moved a bit away from the tree base. The camera may not have given us a true picture, though.

I see a Porsche picnic this Spring.

A direct to video low budget movie that is coming out in places like Walmart called "Cop Dog", not a terribly bad movie, shows interior and exteriors.

A Discovery Channel piece on human reactions to stress, in that one they simulated my house burning from a brush fire, which is actually a real threat.

The lighting needs some adjustment, I agree it needs to be tilted some. Thanks for the compliments on the property. I have 18 acres of what you see, right in the middle of suburbia just north of LA.

How bout some Mac 2ks (wash and performance, of course) And a bunch of autopars? Then you could have me come over and program for different weather, different occasions, could have some crazy parties back there with good lighting and those cool trees.

Beautiful property Hugh!

I like the idea of solar lights, a bit surprised I have not seen more solar powered stuff. Know several people with solar powered lights, pumps for irrigation, my sister's well is solar.

Would be pretty easy, collector, battery and some LED lights.

As a designer, I can state as fact that all solar landscape lights kits are disgusting. The whole path light thing drives me nuts too. It isn't hard to light a house and landscape well but everyone just looks at what their neighbors did or the Malibu display at homedepot for inspiration. yack

That being said I'm keeping my eyes out for a cheap set of solar lights to take apart and mount stealth style under my dock.

Not true. One can spend crazy money on lighting and those, my friend, works great. Of course you can't go to HD and buy a plastic light and expect it to work.

What typr of desigh work do you do? Lighting?

The camera exposure is not doing the effect justice, needs more time on a tripod for the reach of the lights to show.

My preference for tree canopy uplighting is to visualize the smaller branches and leaves illuminated giving a nice visual effect and soft reflected light of the area. Hitting the truck directly creates a bright spot, which is exaggerated in the picture, but that is essentially what the eye sees and the brain changes to make it tolerable. Pleasing light requires less brain "squinting" / filtering.

Light intensity decreases at the inverse of the distance - squared. That means that at 2 ft it will be 1/4th as bright, 3 ft 1/9th as bright. Even illumination from a single source requires the distances to be even.

In order to evenly illuminate a tree the source needs to be off the tree (from the ground, another tree) if you want the trunk fully lit. The other solution is to mount the lights on the BACK of the trunk, illuminating the canopy evenly from there with the bright trunk away from you. Coning the light beam with louvers is another trick.

I would like to see criss-crossing, grid pattern red or green laser lights. Your place looks great.

I had the camera on a tripod with a 2 second exposure. I'm still playing with the lighting, this was the first night that I had it up. Currently the lights are attached to the base of each tree, I have enough weather-tight flex that they're easy to move around. Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to play with them a little.

I modified four of them to mount on the four corner posts of our dock on our pond. Kind of neat when fishing or relaxing late in the evening on a nice summer night.

Nice place Hugh! Sometimes I wish we had some rolling terrain on our property, but ultimately the flat Ohio farm land is perfect for playing around in small airplanes.
