When did you start drinking coffee?

For me, it was 8 yrs old, on Sundays after church. That was all there was to drink. You loaded it up with cream and sugar and it was fine.

No wonder we were hyper as kids! Sugar and caffine!

Seahawk 04-03-2009 06:54 AM

My Mom's side of the family is Spanish...coffee was a staple at every gathering I can remember.

I was probably 8 or so as well.

Jeff Higgins 04-03-2009 07:09 AM

About 5:30.

emcon5 04-03-2009 07:10 AM

Navy.

pookie 04-03-2009 07:17 AM

Still don't and I'm over 30. I used to think all adults drank coffee, maybe I'm just weird. But I do drink sweet tea like a fish.

rouxroux 04-03-2009 07:17 AM

I guess I was about 6. I'd go with Dad to the airport on Saturdays while he was working, filling out payroll reports. I'd wander the terminal, everyone would put me to work (washing cars at Hertz & Avis, straightening up displays at the gift shops, peeling potatos & hand cranking ice cream at the cafe)...I'd usually get "paid off" with Matchbox cars, home-made hand-cranked vanilla ice cream or coffee. Good times.

Monza_dh 04-03-2009 07:24 AM

Funny, I was just talking about this the other day. My wife is first generation Sicilian Italian and tried it around 5yrs old and has been drinking it since she was 10-12.

I only had my first cup in college and started drinking regularly in the am when I was around 22.

Now?......I drink 2-3 double espressos a day.... making up for lost time I guess.

I would drink it on occasion (maybe once or twice a month) starting when I was 9 or so, but didn't become a daily coffee drinker until I joined the work force after college. Converted from milk/sugar to black at around the same time.

Strangely enough, I drink probably 4-5 cups a day during the week but typically none on the weekends, and that has never been a problem for me... guess I don't react to caffeine the same way most people do.

Zeke 04-03-2009 07:41 AM

Late 20's.

nostatic 04-03-2009 07:46 AM

i'm walking to get one now

masraum 04-03-2009 07:46 AM

I remember drinking a little here and there when I was very young. My grandmother would give me some of hers when I was 3-6. She always had lots of cream and sugar. I don't think I've had coffee since I was about 6 or so. I'm 38 now. I also stopped drinking soft drinks about 6 years ago. The closest I get these days is flavored seltzer water (no sugar, just water, bubbles and "natural flavor"). I'll often have 1/3 orange juice 2/3 Canada Dry Seltzer water.

LeeH 04-03-2009 07:58 AM

I never did develop a taste for it. In fact the smell kinda makes me nauseous - especially on an empty stomach. I feel like I must be missing out on something good since so many folks love the stuff.

HardDrive 04-03-2009 07:59 AM

10-12. I would go rabbit hunting with dad. When its 10 degrees, any warm drink sounds good. He drank his with a lot of milk and sugar, so it was pretty good as kid.

dd74 04-03-2009 08:02 AM

14 or 15, but in much smaller doses than now. Lots of milk and sugar then.

I think Starbucks has a policy of not selling caffeinated drinks to anyone under 16.

austin552 04-03-2009 08:09 AM

When did you start drinking coffee?

I beleve in a past life...

BeyGon 04-03-2009 08:10 AM

When I found out you could put whiskey in it to make it taste good.

I started drinking (coffee) the first time I went to the field as a lieutenant. We were on a division exercise and I was the night TOC (Tactical Ops Center) Officer and it sucked beyond comprehension! I couldn't sleep during the day (helicopters landing vic of my tent) and I damn sure couldn't sleep on duty so coffee became my crutch.

And in case your wondering, the mess sergeant wasn't baking anything but the nastiest eggs (served before daylight so you would gag when you looked at your food) and his coffee wasn't safe to pour on the ground! No wonder people in the Navy have to watch their weight!!!

ramonesfreak 04-03-2009 09:10 AM

8 years old

onewhippedpuppy 04-03-2009 09:17 AM

16, when I was taking a 7 am class in high-school. It's all been downhill from there......

Oh Haha 04-03-2009 09:23 AM

Probably around 11 or 12 years old.:(

Don Plumley 04-03-2009 09:35 AM

College. Started grinding and brewing in the fraternity house. We started off with high standards for scotch and coffee. Lower standards for beer and girls.

azasadny 04-03-2009 09:41 AM

When I was in the US Navy, I was 21 in 1982 when I joined up.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-03-2009 09:42 AM

Early college. Damn I wish I'd discovered its many virtues sooner!

KaptKaos 04-03-2009 09:44 AM

Probably at about 8 or 9 years old. With a lot of milk and sugar.

red-beard 04-03-2009 09:44 AM

At least you have your priorities straight

James, you must be Catholic. I remember that my parents would take us to coffee and doughnuts every Sunday immediately after church. I would load up my cup of joe with tons of sugar and creamer. Wow, now I feel old.

Schrup 04-03-2009 09:53 AM

15 years old working in the cucumber fields. Greatly increased my productivety. I could make $50 before lunch time which was a lot of money back in 1980. Too bad I spent it on booze & pot.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-03-2009 09:58 AM

Parents used to drop me off at church when we were kids. As soon as they drove off I'd split and head for Dunkin' Donuts. I was too young to drink coffee then but used to enjoy hanging out for about an hour at "Our Lady of Chocolate Frosted" reading the paper or whatever, then I'd walk back to be "picked up". I got away with this for years. :)

Episcopal, which is pretty darn close..

MBAtarga 04-03-2009 10:44 AM

iced coffee - one summer as a pre-teen with my Grandmother.
hot coffee - sometime in high school.

JavaBrewer 04-03-2009 11:16 AM

Around 14 or so. Mom and Dad had a very fixed morning routine with coffee and I sorta just joined in. Now the wife and I start every morning at 6:30 am with a home brewed cafe Americano (espresso, touch of milk, and hot water).

slodave 04-03-2009 11:20 AM

I never developed a taste for coffee or tea.

look 171 04-03-2009 11:25 AM

first of college. then up to 2 pots or 5,8 cups a day. Now, in the past month, I cut it way down to 1 cup every 2 days.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-03-2009 11:30 AM

We used to brew coffee with Crank2O in grad school. It got the job done.

targa911S 04-03-2009 12:31 PM

7 or so...

Oh Haha 04-03-2009 12:39 PM

Hey Targa.

Do you drink coffee when at a gig?

I used to have the bartenders make a pot for me on nights during the week as I had to work the next day. People thought I was all sorts of odd for doing that.

Used to keep the pot right on my drum riser.:D

Nooooooooo... for musicians, Red Bull's the hands down favorite.

Or Red Bull and vodka. :D

gtc 04-03-2009 01:26 PM

I think it was when I was 14. It was probably Frappucinos at Starbucks that led to mochas, lattes, americanos, then just drip.

It's a gateway drink, I tell you!
