activities you miss

Only so much time in the day, week, year...

I miss playing jazz trombone, brewing beer, mountain biking and doing ice sculptures.

my old ice carving site

Maybe someday I'll return to these missed interests.
I miss the jazz the most.

Sailing as well...

I miss playing my guitar everyday after school until I graduated college. Put it down and haven't picked it up in years. I miss the free and easy running strides of my youth. Lost in the last 10 years or so. I catch sight of myself in a store window and think, "Who is that short stepping old dude?"...until I realize its me!

Paintball, brewing, pistol shooting at the range. I've been too busy with life to do any of these for awhile... I have been able to play the drums every week!

I am at that age where lots of things I once liked to do (or convinced myself I liked to do them) no longer appeal to me. I can name overhauling an automatic transmission for one. I plan more and try not to start something which might have problems that cannot be anticipated. Hence, I will do minor plumbing jobs but not a whole system overhaul. The experts are called for the big stuff.

Hobbies I used to like and no longer spend as much time with: astronomy and model railroading. The first, lugging out the equipment, the second lack of a dedicated room. Hobbies that have increased include finish carpentry and photography. The second because digital makes it so damn easy and I do not have to wait to see the results. Carpentry because of the feeling of satisfaction.

Dinghy sailing...truth! I believe I'll miss sailing a 15" Chrysler Mutineer more than I will miss driving a 1972 911S. Talk about "feel and connection" with a human built contrivance? That little boat had it all. Especially once I learned to feel wind direction with my ears...this was as close to heaven without leaving the planet that I've been.

I miss competing in boxing and MMA. The recovery time and reaction time is the first to go. I loved that first contact of my glove on my opponent's face and the eye flutter that went along with it......

Talking with my folks. They both passed in 2001.

Walking with my dog, Indy. He passed 2 months ago.

Golf... just lost interest when our regular group lost touch.

Sounds fantastic! But how about when your opponent loved watching your eye flutter????

Damn...I don't want to think too hard about it....

OK - the girlie stuff first.
Having time to have coffee on any of the great "strips" I used to frequent. Meet the friends and morning coffee streams into boozy lunch...
Shopping FOR ME! I spend whatever shopping time I have to have now buying the never ending stuff for 3 kids, doing the "supermarket grand prix" at least 3 times per week in between work and other stuff. Get outta my way you old bags cos I don't have time to stroll through the supermarket! I need a turbo-trolley and I work up a sweat as I fly up and down the aisles. 6 in the house - I could spend my life at the damned supermarket and associated food stores .
Having time for manicures and pedicures and all nice girlie things...

Partying all night long, drinking plenty of good Scotch and still being at work at 7.00am in the morning looking and feeling as fresh as a daisy .

The good stuff:
Driving my car - HARD! No bloody time anymore...
Going clay shooting, pig shooting etc with my Dad
Early morning runs on the beach with a friend and my Border Collie (RIP)
Playing my guitar
Singing (still sometimes manage that one under the shower but no time for choir anymore)
Dad - he was a pastime all by himself

That'll do.... It's not like I don't have fun anymore...really...I'm just like any other Mum though - swamped under the kids and hubby and all their associated wants and needs ...

I'm just getting to the reverse side of that slope, if there's something I want to do I hang a closed sign on the door and go. I can see Tuesdays becoming a designated day off.
That mortality thing is raising its head.
