my step dad was in the confederate air force, back before it became the commemorative air force.. i listened to the old guys debate the wisdom of flying the warbirds. despite the risk, the general consensus was that there was something lacking in a plane that left the ground. if they don't fly they're just inanimate objects.
aerobatics, out of control spin, = structural problem? metal fatigue?

I have had a thing for P40s since I read a book on the Burma Road before I was a teenager.
They may not have been the fastest or the best aircraft in the sky, but there is something about them especially when in Flying Tiger paint. I am sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and such a fine war bird.

My wife's father flew P-40's in China; was a 'Flying Tiger' for Claire Chennault.
Also flew the 'hump' in Burma. Then, the twin engined P-38 Lightning in North Africa against Rommel. Amazing. He started flying when he was 12; flew on his parents ranch in CO, landing on dirt roads. That ranch is now an elbow to elbow suburb of Denver. |
