2010 Ford Taurus SHO

Hey now - this is a pretty cool car. I know it's not a Euro Mondeo (touche, Matt ), but this ain't bad for good ol' American Ford efforts.

The 365 hp turbo V6 sounds hella' cool.

That's a bit spendy at starting $38K. I was lucky enough to rent a early '90s SHO Taurus for a weekend race...errrr....trip to Vegas. The motor was really really fun. No outside badges other than the SHO marking in the rear bumper it was a sleeper.

I'm stuck in the '80s though and consider anything north of $20K to be an incredible amount of money to pay for a car...

The 38K prices it as a direct competitor with with the Pontiac G8.

I had a IIRC 1994 Taurus SHO, what a fricking rocket it was. Nice until you needed engine and trannie parts. They were as expensive as Ferrari parts. That new one looks good.

The front of that thing looks like the back of a Toyota Camry.

The last generation Taurus looked like it belonged in that family of cars. Why do these new ones take their styling cues from Ford pickups??

I had a company leased SHO the second year of production, sold it at 55,000 miles. It was a very fun car and really didn't have any bad attitudes other than some mild torque steer on hard acceleration. The Yamaha engine was a joy and had a wonderful exhaust tone, five speed was also quite smooth as well. Specs said 220HP but it sure seemed like a lot more.

I've never driven anything with FWD that had significant HP... it would seem to me that one could get around a good bit of the torque steer problem by rolling on the throttle smoothly instead of just stomping it like a 16-year old kid... aka making love to it instead of... (insert your own crude metaphor here, I'm not gonna).

What say you?

A classmate in college received a new performance Ford every year, as his dad was some big shot engineer there. He said the SHO was the fastest modern Ford he'd ever driven - faster than the Mustang GT or Cobra.

As for this, I'm very curious about the engine. The Ecoboost engines are what Ford will use across the board in their four and six cylinder applications. It's said it might replace the V8 in almost every car except the Mustang.

Keep in mind, I did say mild. and it had some pretty good size tires 215/55x16 which did help. Any way it was great fun to drive.

I have seen one in person, up close... they are nice looking, with a nice interior and little things that stood out to me as classy stuff.

Problem is it is toooooo biiiiiiig. I had a bit of a bias here as I think anything over 2700lbs is 'big'... but still. I just don't like cars that bulgeous. If that is even a word.

My dad had an 89 SHO. The Yamaha engine was fantastic. He drove car car over 200k! The engine ran better at 200k than new. The body started to rot in the Michigan Salt, but it ran like a top mechanically. I got a NASTY ticket in that baby.... 85 in a 55.

Too bad there is very little suspension tuning in the 2010 SHO package. Great motor in a heavy, flubbery chassis.

$38K? I'd get a 993.

Looks good. Too much dough, plus, the depreciation smack off the lot. At high 30s, there's so much good a$$ kick'n iron out there to be had across the spectrum. Low 30s would be ok.

So would i, but then i wouldn't buy any new car. It's a fools purchase. Few things in life will lose you money as efficiently as buying a new car every year.

That being said a 993 is not comparable to a 4 door touring sedan.

A man after my own heart. The math simply doesn't work much past $20k. On a $25k purchase your payments are around $400-$500. Anything beyond that is just stupid for a depreciating asset I think. And no, I don't do leases either. I'm not that vain to feel like I need a new car every 2-3 years to the point I'm willing to get robbed blind for it.

I could see MAYBE buying a really nice, expensive car ONCE in my life if I ever really hit it big - a new 997 or something. But that would also be a purchase (not a lease) and it'd be a one-time thing with the knowledge that it was an indulgence. What are the payments on a GT3 anyway? $2k a month or something? It's gotta' be crazy.

I can't fathom paying $35k or $40k for a car on a routine/regular basis and accepting it as normal. Just can't.
