Interesting encounter with metally ill neighbor (Very long)

This has been an on going issue for many many years, but last night was a bit different.... My personal safety is not an issue, but it was bothersome nonetheless.

The neighbor lives in the house above my parents (terraced plots).

I was going to my parents for a family dinner last night and things became a little weird. I was going up one of two streets that merge ( I do not have a stop sign, nut the street to the right does), when I noticed a largish white automobile coming up to the stop on the right - hard to describe, but I was not 'near' him at this point. He merges into the road I am on - I was still a ways back and I was able to confirm that it was the loony neighbor. I am constantly on alert for his white truck when I drive around the local area...

At this point he is driving a little slower than I and I get closer to him, but consciously remain further being him than I would other traffic. We come up to the next stop sign and he stops, then turns on his hazards, moves as if he his going to make a right at the 4 way stop, then proceeds to make a left and disappear down another street....

I need to get to my parents, but I had a few minutes to play - maybe not the best idea, but it's what made this weird. The road has a few slight bends coming up and another 4 way stop. I new he was going to come back to the street I was on at the next street, and since no one was in front of me, I quickly made it to the next stop and hesitated until another car came up be hind me.. As I was watching the street to my left a couple of cars were coming ans sure enough, he was behind them. At this point I continued towards my parents with him being the forth car behind me, but I was able to disappear around the bend during the next 1/4 mile before the next stop. At this point, he has just become the cat and I the mouse...

What happens now is a little alarming to me. I don't like being a mouse. I have played these games before in other situations.

He is out of sight when I come up to the next stop and make my right - he has to as well to get to his house. At this point, I had decided that I would use the opportunity duck down one of the side streets coming up and wait for him to pass, then become the cat again and follow behind at a careful pace until we are both home. I was able to get a quick glance behind me and made sure that he did make the same right, but he could not have seen me. I find my street and wait... The three cars that were behind me all pass by and I wait a couple more minutes but really have to get on my way... He does not show, so I continue - I had made a right on the street I hid on so as I make my right back onto street I need to go on, I look to my left and notice that he is waiting on a different side street 2 streets down. Yikes! I had figured he was spooked and turned around. At this point I make my way towards my parents again, but was able to make another quick right down another street that will bring me back to my street in about an 1/8 of a mile. He did not see me make this right either. I wait again, see some cars pass, keep an eye out in my rear view, but he does not pass. I really need to get to my parents at this time and continue. Sure enough, as I make my right, I see him two streets down and he pulls out and follows again. A couple of curves and I go up the hill to my parents and pull as far into the driveway that I can. As I pulled in, I noticed a few of the extended family on our street by their cars....

I get out of my car and watch down the street. The neighbor - with his hazards on comes up the street, sees my relatives but not me and speeds p the street, then slows down, speeds up, then slows down - not threatening them just the way he acts. He then starts to pull into the neighbors driveway below us - not his property! At this point, he yells at my family telling them that the are not allowed to be in the street. At this point, I step into view and start towards him. I tell him to shut up and leave. He then yells that I ran a stop sign and tried to run into him. I tell him this is not possible and he proceeds to call (yell) me a liar. He's still part in my neighbors driveway and at this point I yell at him that he is trespassing and that I will all the police... I continue to approach and he rolls up his windows and speeds by me, then slows as he reaches my family, I turn up the hill and verbally lay into him again - my family is rather stunned at this point. Now that he is almost to his drive way, I continue to make sure that he goes into his garage before I back down.

I am not sure what to do. This guy is nuts. The police can't do anything unless they catch him in the act. We have run into each other on the streets before, sometimes it has been anonymous - I have seen him, but he has not seen me. He was erratic then as well. I was at lunch (restaurant) with my parents the other week as he drove down the street - we had a window seat. I commented that he was driving by and sure enough, he had his hazards on and stopped in the middle of the street at one point, holding up traffic on a main street.

Last night was the first night that he actually waited and tailed me home. As I mentioned above, he usually panics and flees.

This is the first time that I am worried for people's safety. I keep waiting for him to really slip up and make me unsure of my safety. If this happens...

This guy is dangerous to himself and others and there's nothing that can be done. What are our options? How far does this have to go? There are at least 10 other families around the neighborhood that have had encounters over the years.

Sorry about the long rant. I tried to put this behind me, but I can't. Crap, it's 2:40 in the am and my adrenaline just spiked again.

You just play into his parnoia. You should just go about your business and not react, for it is your reaction that heightens his parnoia. You should be smart and realize what your dealing with and not become nutz like him...

Very true. I usually do ignore him, but every now and then, it becomes too much. I did play last night, but was just surprised at his tactics. I think he is changing and that is not good.

I'm with Tabs. It's odd, knowing he's a loon, that you would antagonize him. Leave him alone. He's not there. Be invisible to him. Don't look his way, at him, say hello, nadda.

That is why I don't talk with the mentally ill on public transportation. Once you start talking with them, you are in THEIR WORLD.

Unless he directly threatens you or your family, ignore him. Confrontation will only agitate the guy.

slodave, a neutral observer might think you were both crazy and alert the police to the behavior of you guys. Best to stay clear of the nut jobs. Especially if they ever mix guns with their demons.

on old trick used by miners and prospectors(usually alone) here in the west, when set upon by apaches about to kill them was: they would strip buck naked, start jerking themselves, rolling around in the dirt, yelling screaming at the top of their lungs, doing dances and gyrations, jerking themselves more....................

and the apaches would leave without harming them because they thought the miner was "POSSESSED!" by evil spirits!

try it, it just may work! LOL!

WTF were you thinking? Cat and mouse game with the neighbor? Sounds like you're both nuttier than a squirrel turd.

Knock off that stuff. He was probably up late (early) ruminating about the encounter as were you! And, unlike you, not coming to logical or healthy conclusions. Be careful, he may take something out on your family.

You apparently have never learned the secret of "Speaking softly and carrying a big stick."

Reading your description of your "cat and mouse" routine with him sounds like you are the "crazy" one.

If he's a threat, be aware of him and call the police if he does something to justify it, but the last thing you should be doing is "playing games" with him.

Just go about your business "ignoring" him.
