There is a Porsche plane too, you could look it up, I am too lazy to; oops, the plane had a 911 motor as I recall.

Cool boat

Not really a Porsche boat -- a boat designed by Porsche Design.

It has a Viper engine.

Porsche Crest

Years ago there was a 928 powdered off-shore racing boat, late 80s, early 90s I think. I remember seeing it in Pano

Ferrari made a boat for someone going after speed record attacks with a supercharged Lampredi F1 motor. I think it was in the 150MPH range.

The Porsche powered plane - I'd hardly call it a 911 motor, by the time the modifications for airplane use, new thing entirely. I may be wrong on the spelling, but I believe its Mooney that makes the plane the Porsche motor goes into.

Porsche also tested the 959 motor in an airplane as well.

I thought a few of these engines made their way into Cessnas as well.

Yes, the Porsche PFM airplane was a modified Mooney. As far as Cessnas, I've seen MANY Corvair engines used in 150 "Frankensteins", and the 110 Corvair engine is a popular unit with homebuilders.

The BIG problem with the Porsche engine was weight. 200# heavier than a similar Lycoming.

Most of what I read says that the big problem was reliability and maintenance. Few of your regular mechanics wanted to work on it.

IIRC, Porsche made an effort to buy back all of the PFMs in an effort to eliminate their liability.

EDIT: One AD, issued in 1999, covering all 3 variants of the PFM3200.

The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt Authority (LBA), which is the German airworthiness authority, recently notified the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that an unsafe condition may exist on certain Dr.Ing.h.c.F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft (Porsche) PFM3200N01, N02, and N03 reciprocating engines. The LBA advises that they have received reports of six cases of undetected fatigue failures of valve springs with one valve spring failure causing an in-flight engine failure that ended in an emergency landing. A metallurgical analysis determined that the relative motion between the valve spring and valve spring retainer will result in fatigue cracking of the valve spring and eventual failure of the spring. This condition, if not corrected, could result in an in-flight engine shutdown.

There is also the Porsche tractor, and 356 engine based airplane, boat, and "industrial" engines.... in fact, someone just posted not to far back on the 356 forum here about getting a 356 based airplane engine...

Cooling drag was another issue with the PFM3200.

While having a fan connected to the crankshaft is a good idea for acheiving consistant temperatures on an air-cooled engine, it created more drag than the comparable Lycoming IO-360.

The cooling air exiting the cowl on the airplane's belly was so disturbed that Mooney eliminated the inboard gear doors, as they proved to add nothing but complexity and weight.

Having one lever controlling the engine's output was a big step forward over the normal Throttle/Prop/Mixture manually operated controls.

Ultimately, while the airplane had some nice features, it was more expensive than the Lycoming powered Mooneys, with no increase in performance. Very few were sold.

Many homebuilts have been based on VW and Type 4 engines. There is a huge difference between the simple 4 cylinder pushrod engine and the DOHC 6 cylinder engines. No comparison in complexity or maintenance.

42 according to the Mooney registry. Introduced at $193k, the same airplane with a Lycoming engine sold for $177k. Hell of a premium for Porsche power.
