Deli Counter Pet-peeve

Drives me nuts when I order a pound and a half of meat, and the deli-person puts more than 1.5 pounds of meat on the scale, yet doesn't re-tare the scale back to the correct amount. Should I be responsible for their inability to properly judge/measure the correct amount of meat??

My hometown grocery store would always reset the scale to whatever amount you ordered....even if they overshot the amount of meat. I thought this was the standard/correct thing to do. I have yet to find a meat counter in Indy that does this.

Here in NY, they just ask if a little bit over is ok...

If I ask for 1 pound, sometimes I get 1.1 or more for the price of a pound..... have never seen them slice under

Also is an ounce or two of lunch meat worth so much worry??

It's just the principle of it. Obviously, I'm not gonna break the bank if Mr Deli Counter decides to put an extra ounce on. Poor customer service and a general appearance of laziness and lack of care on their part.

However, it would be fine if they gave me 1.1 pounds but charged me for 1.0 (like I ordered).

It's just that everytime I go to the deli, I get 1.1 pounds and pay for 1.1 pounds, (without them asking if it's ok), instead of getting 1.1 pounds and paying for 1.0 pounds.

Again, this never would have been happened in my hillbilly hometown of 1200 people.

At least in Cali, anything that weighs or measures stuff sold is supposedly tested and certified with a little sticker. So when you ask for 1.5 pounds of stuff, you get what you paid for.

If the person behind the counter could re-tare the scale, and forgot about it the next time someone ordered, they'd be shorted. So I'm pretty sure they are not allowed to re-tare the scale down to your precise 1.50000 lbs of meat.

When I order meats at the counter, and if it is a little over, the guy looks at the number, looks me in the eye, and I say "Okay" or "Take it off", and all is well.

That's what I'm getting at...I have yet to find somebody who actually checks to see if their over-meating is ok with me. They just throw it in the bag, zip it up, and toss it on the counter without even checking.

I'm just in a frustrated mood tonight....I guess the deli guy just put me over the edge, LOL.

Funny at the market I frequent, they ask if under is ok, is over ok.. etc..

Embraer, you need to go out and get over liquered tonight!! Was at the deli yesterday and she asked not once but twice ( as I changed my mind how much turkey I wanted) is a bit over ok ?? You know everyone in the midwest didn't get overweight by accident!! LOL

Every deli counter I've ever been to and bought something by the lb., they ask if it's close enough and take some off if I say I want a little less. Many different states and countries. Then again, I find the people in NYC to be perfectly nice and polite. YMMV.

My pet peeve is when I order a pound of meat, they cut 1.1 pounds, and then they take a slice off to try to give me only a pound. Happens all the time. they don't ask if over is ok, they just try to make it exact. Hell, 1 pound or 1.1 pounds, I don't care. I'd rather have a tad more than a tad less. Trying to get exactly a certain amount of an irregular substance that comes in slices (of unknown weight) is a bit nuts in my book.
