God this is a fun business!
I went up to the Manheim Orlando car auction for the 1st time yesterday in search of a Cayenne or Range Rover for a client. Holy Jesus was it amazing!!! I have never seen so many Porsches, Ferraris, Lambos, Maseratis in my entire life. 6,000 cars in all ran through in less than 5 hrs. 25 lanes running a car through every 20 seconds on average!
They even had some oldies like a 87' 911 with 70k original one owner miles and a minty 928S. Not sure what they went for though. I missed on all the Cayenne's but picked him up a really nice Range Rover HSE. Sorry I didnt get more pics but it was a madhouse, plus we kept having to run back inside due to tornado and lightning warnings. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That is cool, but the apostrophes are killing me.
That's a really nice looking Range Rover. I bet he'll be psyched.

Manheim High Line can be a pretty enjoyable time. Had a dealer friend take me in many moons to pick up BMW 540 and there were interesting vehicles aplenty as you noted.
The cool part was I got to bid on the car I ultimately purchased. It was cool to do the subtle nod in order to place your bid. I felt like I was at a high end art auction. Picked up the 540 and enjoyed it for 6 years before I traded it. Fun experience. |

Hey Terry, what are Cayennes going for these days? My wife has been lobbying for an X5, I've been pushing for a Cayenne if she has to have an SUV. Do you ever handle (gulp) minivans?

You suck.
I tried to get a KS dealer's license but don't have a dedicated location or frontage. Damn it. That brings back good memories, as a kid I used to go to the KC auto auction with my grandfather.

Terry...if you don't mind me asking, what/how do you charge clients? For example if I contracted with you for a specific car, how do you set up the deal? Obviously I would provide you with a deoposit so you don't have to pay out of your pocket, but what else is part of your deal?
I may be in the market for a specific vehicle for the Missuss... You can PM if you prefer...TIA

Man! The Cayenne is cheap. They're almost worth buying at those prices.

Hopefully you don't find that it gets old kinda fast. I did.
I found that out here in California, the auction prices weren't really much different than a "low retail" price, at least on BMWs and Mercedes. The prices on those cars at Manheim have been insane for many months now. I did it as a hobby for a year, it actually worked out financially pretty well (would never quit the real job, though), but I found that after a while, I was really dreading going to the auctions. I would always be very disciplined and only buy very nice cars that did not get bid up too high (I would rather walk away with no cars than overpay for one), but even then, the margins were very tight, at least out here in California. I guess that's why so many independent dealerships have gone out of biz here, including some that have been around for 25 years. It was something as a mongo car enthusiast I always wanted to do, was fun while it lasted, was a great experience, made a few bucks (but put a ton of hours in, most of which was fun, tho), drove a lot of cool cars, never lost money on any of them (although only a very small profit on a couple), never had an unhappy customer, and am glad I did it - - but don't and won't miss it one bit! |

Thanks for the info!
The Range Rovers sure are nice looking. Anyone know much about the newer ones? Would you own one without a warranty?

LR's have a pretty good factory warranty. This one had a 6yr/70k transferable. No worries for awhile.
