Guess it made sense to me SmileWavy

Why? Per my IBM tech rep (Tom Frein) and the tape guru (Bob Sommer), there is no legit reason not to put HSM into the VTS. Curious why your reps steered you away from that - maybe they figured they can make more money off you by selling you more 3592 native drives and tapes.

I'm putting both HSM incremental backups and ML2's into the VTS. I was considering going to native tape (3592's as well), but the biggest reason for putting HSM into the VTS is the fact that I can do away with the whole HSM Tapecopy process, since the VTS Copy export will duplex the tape in the background. That's gotta save a few MIPS on the Z/10 box!

As far as TMM - all of that is going into the VTS as well - why waste primary DASD for TMM? TMM was a good methodology prior to the advent of virtual tape - but now, it simply is much more cost effective to shoot the data to virtual tape.

You gotta upgrade that bad boy to a 3584/TS7700. It rocks!

Management didn't want to spend cash basically - HSM would have overwhelmed the B10 and they didn't want to spend more.

I've been pushing for the new library/vts but if it isn't free then it's not going to happen right now !

I found out from a subcontractor of a subcontractor that we're now going to be 2 weeks late on delivery. And the subcontractor never told us and in fact lied to our faces about it. I'm now considering our production options including pulling contracts. And booking travel for a dog and pony in NC next week. And preparing the dog and pony deck for review. And sorting out a location shoot the following week. And viewing casting call from this AM. And taking another rewrite pass at the script. And determining fly-through animation timings. And writing an SOW and budget for another sub. And determining a contract mod for another project. And writing a proposal for yet another project. And trying to go through a bunch of data on yet another project.

My day is just ducky...

Oh, so your one of them open systems guys, eh? Ya know why open systems are growing so much? 'Cause the open systems folks haven't figured out efficient computing yet!!

Actually, I do mainframe storage management as well as open systems SAN management - so I literally straddle the fence between the two. Started in mainframe, and took up SAN stuff about 7 years ago. Since I'm the only storage guy at work, I have the joy of managing both! (135TB). I do have help in the open system TSM realm - someone else takes care of that mess.... ;)

Oh, and last week (Wed/Thursday), I was having fun chasing down some 911's in North West CT ;) :
