New Beater (yes another new car)

But this one is slow.

It's a '91 FJ80 Land Cruiser with 191k. Exterior is very good (considering), original paint is very nice, no real dents, zero rust. 2 owner, records since new including the original window sticker. Everything works, interior is in excellent shape (just needs a detail). I drove it back from OKC last night. This will serve as a backup DD, Home Depot runner, and maybe get a little offroad fun as well. It's slow but incredibly simple and very solid. It makes no apologies for what it is, and I like that.

That's pretty cool, Matt... nice find.

I don't know if we're gonna let you call it a beater though.

But hey, take the bumpers off, rub some dirt on it, and put some cigarette burns in the seats, and we'll consider it.

Come on... I know you checked the MPG on the trip home... what was it? Anything over 16 is gravy.

Hey, it's cheap and old, that's close enough for me. Per the PO it will get 16 MPG at 65-70 MPH. I haven't filled it up yet from my trip, so I don't know what I got at 75 MPH. I probably don't want to know.

The Jag will be selling long before this one.

Part of the motivation for this purchase was to serve as a backup vehicle. It will probably sit quite a bit and only see DD duty when I'm between cars.

I actually talked to David (DMoolenaar) about the Disco, as he's had 3. There's just too many potential expensive issues, I wanted something MORE reliable than the cars I usually drive.

Fortunately after hearing that about the 3FE I was actually pleasantly suprised. It will do 75 with the A/C on without trouble, I was expecting it to barely be able to climb hills.

I've been happy with my personal D2, but maybe I've just been really really lucky. That Cruiser should run forever if you treat it right though, a much more dependable choice.

Matt, I bet that thing will last you damn near a lifetime should you choose to keep it as an occasional driver.

From browsing LR forums, it seems that they are hit and miss. I just didn't want to take a chance. Nice trucks though, I really liked the Disco 2 that I test drove.

That's typically not a worry for me, is it? I plan to keep it for quite some time, we'll see if I can stick with my plan.

Maybe we just need to periodically trade cars?

I started sifting through the box of old parts that came with the LC. Inside I found a new power steering pump seal kit (mine is leaking) as well as a new idler pulley (mine is squeaking). Sweet! I also detailed the interior last night, this thing has been well-loved because it is in great shape. The only interior flaw is wear on the driver's seat, but it came with new OEM seat covers.
