Oregon trooper reels in line of Ferraris, Lamborghini

Not sure if this has already been posted. I apologize if it has....

I saw the following article on CNN.com & I thought you would be interested in reading it.

You know this guy was quite the hero when he got back to the station! He really helped the Oregon general revenue fund with that stop!

Oregon trooper reels in line of Ferraris, Lamborghini

April 24, 2009

(CNN) -- Stop, speed racers, stop.

Police say the cars were pulled over on a dangerous stretch of Highway 18 near Grand Ronde, Oregon.

1 of 3 So said Oregon State Senior Trooper David Petersen after he was able to catch up with six exotic sports cars on a stretch of Highway 18 near Grand Ronde on Thursday, according to a news release.

Perhaps a more amazing feat was that he stopped all the cars simultaneously.

"They just were all good little soldiers and pulled right over," Oregon State Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings told CNN.

One of the drivers was later cited again on a different highway.

The drivers of the cars -- consisting of Ferraris, a Lamborghini and an Acura NSX -- told Petersen they were part of a group of 20 similar cars making an annual road trip, the news release said.

They were all cordial and cooperative, and were cited with speed racing, a class A traffic violation that can command a fine of $627, Hastings said.

After receiving reports Thursday morning that several sports cars were speeding and passing in no-pass zones west of Grand Ronde, Petersen set up east of the casino town, near McMinnville, and waited.

Five of the cars soon blew past him, running about 100 mph in a 55-mph zone, Hastings said. As Petersen pulled onto Highway 18 in pursuit, a sixth car passed him.

"I guess when you're going too fast, you're in a rock and a hard place," Hastings said.

Highway 18 runs from Dayton, Oregon, in the Willamette Valley to the Pacific coast. The stretch where the cars were cited is considered particularly dangerous and the Oregon Department of Transportation provides additional funding to enforce traffic laws there, Hastings said.

About two hours after the incident, another trooper pulled over the Lamborghini from the group in Multnomah Falls, about 90 miles east. The driver of the car, which bore the the license plate "BADBUL," was cited for driving 90 in a 65-mph zone, according to a news release.

Note they were cited for "speed racing". Do you really think they were "racing" or simply following each other at a high rate of speed?

To me there is a huge difference. If they really were racing they would have been going faster than "about 100 mph" as noted in the article.

That's the other thing about the article. But then they'll all have high priced lawyers for their tickets.

This is why we used to do this on the highway between TJ and Ensenada.

You can always make a "donation" to the officers favorite charity, instead of a ticket

I always thought that you could go straight to jail and kiss your DL goodbye if you get caught actually racing another car on a public highway.

I hope their high-priced lawyers can set some good precedent.

But ORS ORS 811.125 Speed Racing: Exhibition of Speed includes:

(a) A speed competition or contest.
(b) An acceleration contest.
(c) A test of physical endurance.
(d) An exhibition of speed or acceleration. ***
(e) The making of a speed record.
(f) A race.
(g) A drag race.

So, [d] makes it tough to beat that rap.

The state seems to think that draconian penalties are a substitute for giving the cops money for more officers. Once they do hire more officers, we will have the wost of all worlds...

The cop was right to ticket these guys if the advance reports were correct. Driving over the speed limit but otherwise obeying all the laws including road and traffic conditions might be one thing, but passing normal road traffic in no pass zones at a high rate of speed deserves what they got.

I think Dens is right, these cowboys were lucky they got to continue on.

I don't consider going 100mph in a F-40 "speeding"... I would have told the cop "officer I was just trying to get out of first gear!!".

Based on the definition (c) given they need to ticket and fine everyone participating in a foot race, marathon, bike race, etc.

The trooper would have been better off citing all of them for the MPH over the posted limit. It's a pretty easy ticket to make stick. In our state, at 100 mph your car is impounded and you get a free ride to the pokey in the back of the nice trooper's car.

They'll beat this one, not the best statute to make stick in court.

Okay, now confession time. Based on how that statute is written above, how many of the points have each of us broken? I think I could claim four pretty easily and everyone says I drive like a grandma.

Angela - it is obvious that you have not represented too many people in Oregon traffic courts.

I wish them good luck - 'cuz they ARE gonna need it.

Somehow, the idea it was done for safety reasons rings fairly hollow to me.
