Thumbs up Good Cheap Wines, part 87: Coppola Malbec

I've been drinking a lot of Red Blends lately, and I got this for about $12 at my local store. I'm definitely a layperson as far as wine goes, but I like this a lot! It's up there with Veramonte Cab in my book!

Thick, creamy red wine tones combined with a hint of red wine, and a smooth red wine-flavored finish.

How bout you? Maybe this should have been in Dueller's thread.

Ive never had Francis' wine. I'll have to try that one. If it is anywhere close to the Godfather I or II, or even Apocolypse Now...then it will be pretty damed good.

If you like blends, try an 05 or 06 'The Prisoner' by Orin Swift. The Coppola stuff is pretty good. The one that amazed me is the Big House Red rated at like 90 points for 10 bucks/bottle. It's a bastard blend of a whole lotta stuff.

MMMMMalbec.
One of the best values in my (another layperson) opinion...
Luigi Bosca '06 is a pretty good value as is the Dona Paula '07. Both Malbecs.
Very rich almost velvety taste. It's too early to open one now, isn't it??

Not if you float a Cherrio in it...

I try to keep these discoveries to myself... the last thing I need is for the local merchants to run out of stock, or to drive prices up!

And this from a bottle of red wine?

Say it isn't so!

Well, I didn't want to talk "above" my knowledge level, so that's all I could offer.

Even though talking above your knowledge level is de rigeur on PPOT.

"Sassy...but not arrogant." (from an actual wine review I read years ago.)

What? Two buck Chuck from Trader Joes?

I heard FFC on a radio talk show taste-testing some wines. The commentator asked "What do you think of this one"? FFC said "Who'd drink this swill"? commentator: "I thought you would recognize one of your own wines" Pretty funny.

However, FFC does have some decent low-priced wines.

The Francis Coppola Pinot Noir is quite good as well.

My father is going through the local liquor "super store" and trying the cheap wines. The best so far: Coyote Creek Merlot. It drinks more like a Zin.

Love Spanish, Argentine, Chilean reds. Absolutely the best stuff i've had for the money and particularly well suited to the warmer weather we are getting into.

I would suggest going on a buying spree through the above noted sections of your favorite wine store and try anything red from those countries. s/b no more than $13 or so per bottle. these drink great with food (yummy steak!) or by themselves.

These are must haves on any restaurants wine list imo.

A similar domestic red i've had was a cab franc out of Va. Great light red.

Does anyone here use cellar tracker or something similar?

It's kind of fun... and it helps me remember to drink the stuff that's getting old.

My cellar

Funny that.

I need no help remembering to drink what's in my cellar.

I just keep my cellar at the store and that way I have "people" to keep track of it for me.
